Chapter 23:

(Harry's POV)

The anger inside of me was growing and my emotions were on the risk of my vampire side consuming me. If I were to get to that state, it would mean that I would be uncontrollable and my thirst would be the only thought controlling my mind. But I was okay at the moment, I had Ellie on my mind. I needed to stop thinking about her death and look towards trying to get her back.

"She's a witch. Her body should remain where she died, well if someone didn't move them" He shrugged clueless as to what had happened.

"You're a witch. Do one of your spells to bring her back." I demanded with my hands on my hips. Maybe I could get him to bring her back to the living even without her body. He was a witch. I needed a witch.

"I can't just do that it's not how my magic works. Unlike Ellie's I have to channel my power." H explained, informing me of useless information I classed as excuses.

"Then do that." I commented. Where was she now?

"I can't. It's a viscous cycle because I need her body to bring her back and I need something of hers to locate her but all of her stuff would be in the astral plane." He answered. I started to get frustrated. Not only was I talking to the man who killed my Ellie, but I wasn't getting anywhere with bringing her back.

"What astral plane?" I interrupt .

"It doesn't matter." He whimpered.

"It does matter. Your life depends on it actually" I knelt down but he looked away from me as if he was admitting defeat. His silence angering me more. I decided to try and get inside his mind and see if he would divulge anything in his thoughts. I closed my eyes as I did this and saw a past version of Ellie, watched her death through his lens. I saw him conversing with Ryan and decided to go further into the memory.

I was in Tom's memories looking through his perspective as I saw him walk up to a grand old money house. He was being escorted by two men dressed in black suits who were looking around at their surroundings as he reached the door. A man dressed in the same attire opened the door and let us in, leading us through a hall way to room at the back. The two men left me at the front door as I reached the door which was open to reveal an office. Ryan was sat at the desk and stood up.

"Tom. Long time no see. You've not the little lad I saw last time. How are you?" He asked walking around his desk.

"I'm good thanks how are you? Nice place you've got here" Tom said shaking his hands.

"It's not like the plantation but it'll do for now. How's Anne and John?" Ryan asked letting them go and walking back towards his chair at the desk.

"It's still something. They're all good thanks, they're thinking of joining you here in the astral plane." Tom said sitting down on a chair, looking around.

"That would be nice. Helen would like that." Ryan commented.

"Yeah they would do." Tom said.

"So what do I owe the pleasure of your visit? I heard about the incident." Ryan asked, intertwining his hands together on his desk.

"It wasn't an incident. I was just surprised. I was told she was dead." Tom coughed at first but then explained.

"We had to. For her protection." Ryan answered.

"Is she okay?" Tom asked.

"She will be." Ryan said unlocking his hands and sitting back in his chair.

"Can I see her?" Tom asked again.

"I don't think that'll be a good idea Tom. Not now anyway. We need to give her time before we reintroduce you." Ryan explained.

"Oh okay" Tom muttered. I could feel Tom feeling intimidated by Ryan.

"But I do have a small request to ask of you" Ryan started.

"Yeah anything." Tom asked sitting up in his chair.

"I need you to look out and see if she ever returns outside the portal. I fear she'll try and escape and she won't listen to us. Could you ensure if she's seen that you'll bring her back?" Ryan asked. His facial expression was like he was testing Tom.

"Yeah of course" Tom answered. As soon as he said this, Ryan stood up sharply and walked back round his desk as if to say he was done with the conversation.

"I know it's a big ask and with time being different." Ryan carried on.

"I'm happy too." Tom said standing to attention.

"That's good to hear." He replied, patting him on his arm as he shook his hand again. I could an energy surge run through his body like an electric shock.

***

As soon as I saw that he was involved with Ryan, I took myself out of his thoughts which caused him pain. He was pushed to the ground by the pain.

"What happened?" Tom asked dishevelled. He was cursed, Ryan cast some sort of spell on Tom when he shook his hand. Ryan had something to do with Ellie's body disappearing. What did Ryan need with her body? He'd bring her back. He has spent years trying to protect her from death, it would be no surprise that he would resurrect her. But why would he cast that spell to kill her just to bring her back?

"I looked into your mind. I know where she could have gone" I explained.

"If you truly knew everything you would know you wouldn't be able to reach her. Only witches can access the astral plane. The portal will sense you're a vampire and close its door." He said standing up.

"Take me to the portal."

"I can't" he stated sounding defeated as his voice eyes diverted down towards the ground.

"I'm not giving you a choice. Take me or die" I demanded but he still looked away. I took a deep breath deciding to plead with his conscious. I could see he was being used.

"I can't get Ellie back without her body. I have a feeling her parents have something to do with this and I need you to help me so I can bring her back. Please let me fix this for her." I pleaded putting my hand on his shoulder making his look in my direction.

"Okay." He replied. I took my hand off his shoulder and took a step back, one hand on my hip and the other on my chin as I thought about a plan.

"If you stand in front of the portal, I should be able to access it" I explained.

"I don't think it'll work." He replied, still cautious of me. He led us the way towards the portal. I stayed one step behind him but to his side in case he tried to do something reckless.

"We'll have to see about that" I said. We walked the whole way in silence, my thoughts feeling as cold as my touch. We stopped and made it the crossroads I once reunited with Ellie on. I stayed still as he walked to a spot where there was a paving slab that was engraved with a symbol. He knelt down to the symbol and began chanting. A sudden sharp light shot up in the air and landed  a couple of metres higher from the floor as the light became a vertical line like a slightly open door.

"It worked" he said relived as the translucent light from the portal brightened the dark street. He turned towards me as the relief washed over me.

"What happens now?" He asked looking terrified. My first response was to kill him there and then and then run through the portal but I could hear Ellie's voice in the back of mind.

'Don't.'

I thought of Ellie. How she wanted me to be a better person. To make better decisions and not just lead based on my anger. He killed her and I wanted him to suffer but as I looked into his eyes, I could see that he was already in purgatory. I knew he wouldn't have killed her had Ryan not cast the spell.

"I'm going to bring Ellie back." I said before running into the portal. The bright light pulling me further in the abyss.
