Months had passed since Marcus had visited Renae's grave.
"Been long huh, Marcus?"
Marcus turned back to see who was questioning him. To his surprise, he saw Renae's elder brother, Jean.
"Hey, how are you?" Marcus asked with a sudden surprise but a bright smile on his face.
"Had I been good I wouldn't come to see you here today." He laughed.
"What's up? What happened bro?"
Marcus and Jean were pretty close since they were kids but not after Jean left for college. They hardly met each other.
"Before we get to that, meet my wife Roselle, and this is my son, Noel, he's seven. Roselle, this is my good old friend, Marcus. Noel, say hi."
"Hi there, it's a pleasure to meet you." He shook his hand with her's.
"Same here." She replied with a smile.
"Hi, Noel!"
"Hi, uncle Marcaaaas!"
"Uncle? Now I'm an uncle?" Haha he laughed.
"Well, you are also known as, Doctor Marcus Spencer, who will looking after me from now on."
"Why? What's wrong seriously, Jean?"
He looked worried.
"I'm only kidding man, I'm not on your case." Jean laughed.
"What do you mean?"
"Mind if we talk for a while if you're not busy with any of your patients, Marcus?" Jean asked him seriously.
"Yeah, sure. Why not?"
Marcus took him inside his office where he offered him a cup of coffee.
"What's wrong, Jean? Is everything okay?" Marcus who couldn't keep the suspense up any longer asked.
"You see, I don't know what happened but two years ago I started getting this pain which I couldn't explain where it came from. I kept quiet about it to my wife and visited a hospital not too long after that. Turns out according to the result that I needed a kidney transplant."
"And you here at this hospital to get the operation done?"
"No, not yet. I haven't been so lucky, I didn't find one yet." He sighed.
"What? It's been so long and can't you just do without a kidney, you have another one right?"
"That's not it bro! Both of my kidneys are two weak to function properly. I've been under medications all this while that helped me stay for this long but I don't know how long they can take it. I either find one or I die soon. Please keep it away from my son, he's too young to be feeling this kind of sadness."
"Hmm... alright. I'll check and ask someone if anyone's up for it. Don't worry."
"Appreciate it man."
A few days later, Marcus called up Jean.
"Hello bro? It's me, Marcus."
"Yeah Marcus, how is it going?"
"I've found a transplant for you and since you're already late, I've asked the doctors for your surgery. Your operation is in two days."
"Seriously? Marcus, really? You aren't kidding right?"
"Do you think I'll use the hospital's landline just to call on a sick joke?" He laughed.
"Ah, thank God! Thank you, Marcus. I can't ever repay you for this. You just gave me the best phone call of the day." He answered in joy.
"Hey, anything for my best friend's brother. That's the least I could do." He replied back.
