Marcus waited for two long hours.
"Guess she ain't coming huh?" He sighed.
"Maybe she is upset from what happened five years ago, she never received or replied to any of my calls or texts."
"But I'll wait. I need to tell her a lot of things. I need to apologise for a lot more than I could ever count."
"Marcus.......!"
He turned back.
Renae was running, almost out of breath. She was a complete mess.
"I'm.. I'm sorry. The traffic took me longer than I expected and aunt Louisa, stopped me for a chit chat."
"Hold on, little girl. Take a breath for a second." He replied.
"Are you okay? I thought you weren't coming." He said again.
"Oh, how could I not? I'm not someone to break a promise. I waited ten years for this."
"Me too." He smiled.
"Why weren't you home five years
ago?"
"Well, I called you but you never received any of my calls or replied to my texts after that day."
"Oh, I broke my phone while playing games." She laughed.
"You still play? Just how old are you?"
"Once a gamer-"
"Always a gamer!" they both said and laughed hard after that.
"You see that day, I was in the hospital. Mom had to undergo a surgery."
"What surgery?"
"Kidney transplant."
"But I saw your dad that day." She replied.
"Oh, you haven't heard? Mom and dad divorced two years after your family left."
"What? That's news to me, but why?"
"You know, they were always quarreling on bullshit and things got worse."
' I never knew Marcus was a facing such problems at home. I thought he had a wonderful loving family at home. He never got a chance to tell me any of this because I was always complaining about my life. What a hopeless kid I was back then.'Renae thought.
"Well, that's the past. I'm glad they got separated. It's better this way, no more shit to go through every day. Just doing your own God damn job and getting on with your life."
"Say, where are you working?"
"Oh, you didn't know?"
"Stop asking me when you weren't even in touch with me for all these years!" Renae shouted at him.
"Mom got operated at the hospital I work at."
"Wait, you're a nurse? A pharmacist?"
"No, I'm a cardiologist, cool right?"
"Wait, what? How did, no! When did you even... did you cheat or say bought the job?"
"No! Renae! No! I'm not a cheater in life."
"But why a cardiologist?"
"For you."
"Me?" She was puzzled.
"Yeah, to cure you. Remember when we were in eighth grade and you always had to leave classes early because you got palpitations? It was a pain to watch. So, I thought why not save and cure her someday?"
"Very funny, now tell why exactly did you become one?"
"Seriously Renae, you were always sick and ill in the heart, both physically and mentally so I studied hard, why do you think I held back for a year and missed the chance to study at the best engineering colleges? Because I was interested in medical science. I prayed every day just to keep you alive till I became a cardiologist. God did keep his promise but I still am doing my research."
"Marcus I never thought you cared that much but you see, the palpitations and the pain in my chest were all because my bones were weak. I took proper medications which were mostly calcium for my bones and I'm more than fine now." She smiled.
"Wait, you mean all this was for nothing?"
"Yeah but on the bright side, you can still save lives." She whispered to him as she walked on ahead.
