Renae's top of the roof was their headquarters.
Marcus would just listen and say nothing at all.
By the end of her every story he would just hug her until she stopped crying and let her get her mean queen mode on and somehow, he liked that about her.
Both of them never thought about loving each other in a romantic way though.
Actually, Marcus had a girl he really adored. In fact, she was the love of his life. He met her when he was really young.
He was head over heels in love with her (or infatuation maybe, we never know *with eyes rolling*).
Marcus went to church every Sunday without fail and when you go to church every Sunday, God blesses you with a pretty little girl. At least that was his logic. Not long after that, he found out that her name was, Judy.
He had a crush on her for almost like forever.
He wouldn't even make excuses anymore to not go to church.
So, Judy was the only name that had a mark In Marcus' head.
Years passed but everything remained the same.
Renae still depended on Marcus for things she knew she couldn't survive or make it out alone.
Marcus never got tired of her or that's how I thought or how I saw.
There were also other friends who came by in the picture. One of them was, Huck.
For Huck, Renae was like his first ever girl friend. Not girlfriend but girl friend. He adored her like his very own sister. Like his other half.
Marcus and Huck were best buddies too or least acted so.
Why? Because in the end, Huck ended up dating Judy (trust me, I didn't like this Huck character so much).
How? Well, Judy attended the same school Huck went to. In fact, he was in the same class, the same row.
This chick called Judy fell in love with Huck. She was the one who handed him a love letter, months after she knew him (love letter? Seriously? In this age? Why were phones made for then? Plus maybe she didn't know how to save paper).
This Huck was also a nutcase who happily without any delay accepted her as his girlfriend.
(Quiet the eighty's to be confessing through a love letter but that's how the story goes)
Marcus who came to know about this was pretty matured and handled the situation with a normal, "I don't care" attitude (though no one knows how much normal it was).
He still continued to talk with Huck, because Marcus wasn't that kind of friend that would end a twelve year friendship just for a come and go girl.
(Everybody who disliked the Marcus character, pour out some love on him now!*hands already raised up in the air like I'm saying hallelujah*).
Come and go girl, meaning the relationship between the two didn't last long.
Marcus though he acted bold and cool on the outside, inside he had a huge waterproof bandaid put on his heart. That poor guy was hurt.
Renae came to know about this not long before Marcus knew about it and trust me she was ready to break some bones (I mean who wouldn't? I would even kill a person and pretend like Gandhi who hates violence for a person I knew my whole life).
She couldn't believe it at first.
Seeing Marcus and Huck together was the only reason why she believed friendship was something more than just a blessing but this turn of events made her realised one thing for sure- she grew up and kept living believing in a belief that wasn't true.
She couldn't accept it. Marcus, however convinced her that it wasn't her place to be in. She couldn't face Huck anymore, accepting an apology was so hard for her but this good Huck never apologised to anyone and this my readers, didn't make things awkward but created a deep pit between the three of them that no brick made of silver or gold or plaster made up of thousands of feelings could ever fill up.
Each one of them acted like they didn't remember anything (were the best drama kings and queen).
The biggest irony that this happening created was that, a love that wasn't strong enough to last could break some pieces of a lifelong friendship.
