This probably came as no surprise, but, I volunteered to watch Mac and Lily.
What else could I do? They needed somebody to look after them. And frankly, I think they had earned a place in my heart.
Not to say I didn't have misgivings. I did not have the best role models when it came to parents at any point in my life. Mostly, all the foster parents I ever had were only adopting me for the money, and tended to just ignore me. And the caretakers at the orphanage always thought of me as a very bad egg.
So, what did I know about taking care of kids? Nobody ever took care of me right? What could I know about taking care of somebody else then?
But, Akemi was trusting me to get these two acclimated with the village, so I knew I had to do my part.
So our first morning together, I did what hoped any experienced person would. I woke them up, (Lily was up first thing, bright as a rainbow, Mac needed some convincing, that tired little guy). Got them dressed, and then sat them down at the dining table and proceeded to cook breakfast for them.
Our kitchens in Summoner's Village are not too difficult to use, because thankfully, we use magic to power our stuff so to speak. While salt is the tool we use to preserve our food, we have magic stones in our stoves that the locals called volcagnites. These were stones that had been magically enhanced after dragons breathed on them, and therefore, you could control them to generate heat.
By turning the stone knobs on our seemingly primitive looking stoves, we could control the heat the Volcagnites expelled. So it's not like we needed to start a fire or something to cook our fish.
However, there was one thing that one had to REALLY get used to living here. It was the majority of our diet consisting of bread, fish, farm-grown chicken eggs, and the occasional monster meat.
I mean, yeah, it does sound appetizing, but imagine having the same thing every day for the rest of your life. The only thing with any sort of variation was the Hungry Fish restaurant, thanks to the fact that for some reason Jordan new how to catch some pretty good ingrediants when she wanted, and she wasn't revealing how since she needed the customers.
"So.." said Mac as I slid some fried eggs on to his plate. "Toots.. got any greens?"
"A kid ASKING to eat vegetables?" I said. "My my kid, you've got some guts.."
"Nah.. I hate vegetables.. but.. I always figure ya gotta eat some if you wanna stay good looking for the ladies!" said Mac, giving me a wide grin.
"Well, yes we have vegies from time to time." I said. "But, they're hard to grow, so we have to ration out our crops."
"Fish for breakfast?" said Lily, her eyes lighting ups as I filled her plate. "Cool!"
"Eat up." I said. "We have lots to do today. We have to meet Bard, and teach you two to use Kindred."
"Bard is a sucky champion.." Mac muttered.
"NO!" I said, looking at Mac sternly. "Only newbies believe that.. he's tricky.. not sucky.. I should know, I've tried him a couple of times.. he's actually pretty overpowered when you place those double stuns right.."
There was a tense pause, then the three of us burst out laughing..
That was a new one, tense league salty chatter diffused by laughter.. was I going crazy? Or was something changing me?
Mac suddenly stopped laughing, he gave me an uneasy look. "M-Miyoko.. can I ask you something?"
I nodded.
