Louis p.o.v:

For the fifth time now, I’ve looked into the mirror checking to see if I look alright. Currently I’m debating whether I should put gel in my hair or not. In the end I decide to do it. I put a small amount on my hand and then just go through my hair with it, making it look a bit messy. When I check my clock I see it’s already 5:00 pm.

Well, since I don’t like being late on my first day I decide to leave my apartment. I put on my jacket and sling my guitar across my back. It’s a ten minute walk from my house to the bus stop, a twenty minute ride to my destination and then a small five minute walk to the bar.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m only there to sing songs from six till ten o’clock  at night every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And today it’s my first day going there, a Monday.

You might be thinking why I’m going to sing at a bar, but right now I’m trying to save money to go to university. I also work at my dad’s shop during the week but now that will only be on Tuesday and Thursday. My parents refused me to work on the days that I’ll be singing at the bar. They don’t want me to overdo it saying that I’m already working hard enough. If there is one thing you need to know about my parents, it’s useless to argue with them. No matter how much I beg, no means no.

My dad’s shop is a second hand shop, so people can buy used goods there. They can also sell stuff to us. The reason as to why my dad has this shop is because he and my mom had too much stuff. My dad liked to collect a lot of thing when he was younger. For example, he collected different kinds of small planes and he also loved to collect small cars. My mom was basically a bookworm when she was young, thus she had an awful amount of books.

When they knew they were having me, room had to be made for me. So they decided to sell their stuff. My dad owned a place at a small shopping street and he and my mom renovated it. Business went and still is going well. Instead of them throwing something away, they first put it in the shop trying to sell it.

My parents totally had no problem wanting to pay my university fees for me, but I wanted to earn that money myself since they already bought this apartment for me. Something which I’m really glad of.

However only working at my dad’s shop isn’t enough to earn my university money all together. My parents again said they had no problem having to pay for it but I immediately refused their offer.

So I started looking for other jobs of which I was capable of doing. A few days later my dad showed me an advertisement of a bar wanting a singer to entertain the people.
At first I flat-out refused but both my parents told me I had a very good voice and that I could play the guitar and piano pretty good. Well, in my spare time I like to compose songs and play on my instruments. I love to sing, but only when I’m alone. I can play and sing different genres but I mostly do either rock or pop.

However the job does have a nice salary and with some convincing of my parents I called the manager.

And here’s where I am now.

Currently I’m on the bus riding towards the bar and to say I’m nervous is an understatement. Hell, my hands are even shaking a bit and I’m not even there yet!!! Way to go Louis….

When the bus slows down I see that this is my stop. Hurriedly I make my way to the door and step into the cold air outside. Taking out the crumbled paper from my back pocket I carefully try to open it, without trying to rip it apart.

When I finally unfolded it I made my way towards the bar. Luckily I found it quickly, just as I predicted it is around a five minute walk from the bus stop.

Standing in front of the bar I take a deep breath, you can do this Louis, just get your ass in there already before chickening out.

To say that the bar was big is not the right word to describe it, it’s huge and I mean huge. I think there are like at least 100 tables with two chairs at each table.  At one end is the big bar and at the other end is what I can already tell the stage where I’m probably going to sing.

Luckily it’s not too busy, I hope it stays that way for today, cause that would be a nice way to start this job.

Suddenly I notice some people staring at me. Great I must have zoned out a bit standing there like fool at the entrance. Feeling my cheeks burning up and I quickly make my way to the person behind the bar.

“Hi.” I say when I approached her. “I came to sing here today at 6, it’s my first day here so I’m not quite familiar with my routine yet. My name is Louis by the way, nice to meet you.” I take my hand out for her to shake. “Hi, my name is Sandra. I’ve heard our manager talk about a new singer coming. It’s great to finally meet you, come with me I’ll take you to her.” She said and then turns away from me and walks out from behind the counter.

A door next to the bar which I apparently haven’t seen before had the sign “Manager” on it. “Here it is, go inside and you can talk to her about any uncertainties you still have. I have to go back since there are some people itching for a new drink. See ya.” she said as she walked off to her previous place behind the counter, making new drinks for the customers.

“She’s a nice person, I’m glad.” I say to myself. Hopefully everyone here is, I think to myself before knocking on the door of the manager’s office.

“Come in.” I hear a voice say and I open the door to go inside.
