The morning air was crisp as it hit my cheeks and I could see my nose turning red. I put my hands in my jacket pockets to keep them warm. Even though it was the beginning of summer, it didn't mean that the mornings were going to be incredibly warm. My mom and I were on our way to the café for some breakfast. We got out the door on the earlier side so there weren't too many people out roaming the streets. I loved this time of day. The day just started and I was at peace. It was a very calming feeling.
We arrived at the café and were seated quickly. We looked through the menus as we waited for our waiter to come by and take our orders.
"So are you excited to head out soon?" my mom asked. I looked up at her.
"Yeah, I am. I'm excited to see the different cities we go to. But I'm also nervous, you know?" I said, my mom nodding. "It's just a completely new experience for us."
"I get that. I guess I'm a little nervous for this job."
"Mom, trust me, you are going to be great. I have never met a better chef than you," I said. My mom seemed pleased at my words and showed it with the smile on her face. "Plus, Niall said he loved the food from lunch the other day."
"Speaking of the boys," she started. I groaned and hid my face behind the menu hoping to hide my red cheeks. "So, you were hanging out with them?"
I slowly lowered my menu and couldn't help but chuckle at the smirk on her face.
"Uhm, yeah. I ran into Harry and Niall, then we went to breakfast. Then we ran into Liam in the hallway a little bit later." I kept it all very simple, knowing that if I went into every specific detail I would just turn into a giggling fangirl. How had this become my life? Oh yeah, just casually running into my idols and talking to them, no big deal.
"How are they?"
"They're nice. They really are. And sweet. I don't know, I'm just a little nervous because they're One Direction and I'm just this average girl. Why would they want to be friends with me when there's probably so many other people out there who are more interesting?" I couldn't help that confession slipping from my mouth. That fear had been sitting there in the back of my mind since I found out about my mom's new job and this was the first time I had actually voiced it.
"Lydia, stop. Don't say that. They would be lucky to have somebody like you in their lives."
I smiled kindly at my mom but couldn't shake the shadow of doubt looming over me that she was just saying this because she was my mom. She's biased anyway. I don't know how they'd be able to see me as anything besides a fan or the chef's daughter, not a friend.
Once we finished at the café we headed back to the hotel. There was already a group of girls standing outside and we quickly snuck by them to head inside. When we got to our floor, Lou was standing at our door.
"Hey Lou," I said.
"Oh hey! I was just about to knock on your door. Where are you guys coming back from?"
"We just went to breakfast at a café down the road," my mom said.
"Oh that's so nice. Mother daughter time," she said, and my mom and I looked at each other, smiling and nodding.
"So, the reason I was about to knock on your door was I was wondering if you could help me out with something in my room," Lou said, looking at me.
"Yeah sure, I can help. Mom, do you want to come?"
"No that's okay. I think I'm going to finish packing then lay down and take a nap."
"Okay, well I'll be back later," I said, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. I followed Lou to her door and inside. My ears were immediately met with the sound of a young child squealing.
