Previous: Did she really just hear a growl?

Maybe she was nuts.

Jess laid in her bed staring up at the ceiling in her bedroom. She had never been one to have trouble falling asleep at all. In fact, sleeping was her favorite past time but tonight she was having her first bout of insomnia. She had already changed positions a plethora of times and tried closing her eyes and relaxing but nothing was working. It was probably because she couldn't relax at all.

She kept thinking about her scare in the woods. She couldn't figure out Derek Hale at all. He had always been relatively normal but now he seemed weird and closed off. Images of the Hale house fire from the papers years ago flashed through her mind and she knew that had something to do with his change in character. Losing family like that was bound to change someone. She shuttered. She knew it had changed her.

Jess had lost her parents a few years back, right as she was starting College. It had been a car accident just outside of Beacon Hills. She remembered vividly how Sheriff Stilinski had knocked on her door with a look she would never forget. He didn't have to say anything, Jess had already known by his face and demeanor. He had come into the house to explain how her parents had crashed into a wooded area and had ultimately died on impact. She remembered how numb she felt and how none of it had felt real at all. Derek Hale must be still living in a numb world, she thought.

She flipped over in bed and shut her eyes tightly. Go to sleep. Go to sleep. Go to sleep, She urged herself. Finally, a bout of sleepiness rolled over and she took the opportunity to pull the covers tight around her and drift off.

As Jess drifted off to sleep, Derek was pushed into the back of a police car.

The two boys who had grown to be a pain in Derek's ass had gotten him arrested. Derek groaned as the one known as Stiles put his face near the police car window.

"Okay, just so you know, I'm not afraid of you", he young boy stated.

Derek flashed his eyes over intensely at him and the boy pulled away slightly.

"Okay, maybe I am. Doesn't matter," Stiles gripped the side of the police car, "I just wanna know something. The girl you killed-she was a werewolf".

Derek felt a lump form in his throat. The police thought he had killed his sister. Derek was a monster but he could never hurt Laura.

"She was a different kind, wasn't she? I mean, she could turn herself into an actual wolf, and I know Scott can't do that. Is that why you killed her?", Stiles continued.

Derek growled lowly and leaned closer to stiles, "Why are you so worried about me when its your friend who's the problem?".

Derek knew Scott was incredibly predictable. He knew Scott was going to try to play in his insignificant lacrosse game and potentially hurt people. If it wasn't that night, then it would be any other night. Scott was dangerous, even more so than he was. He balled up his fists as he thought about Scott's weird fascination with Allison Argent. He would do anything for that girl, even risk her own safety and the safety of others. His anger towards Scott suddenly stopped as he thought about Jess. Was he out to do the same thing?

He shook his head turning his attention back to Stiles.

"When he shifts on the field, what do you think they're gonna do? Just keep cheering him on? I can't stop him from playing, but you can. And trust me-you want to", Derek said lowering his voice as Sheriff Stilinski made his way over to talk to Stiles.

Derek rolled his eyes and grumbled as Stiles jumped away from the car when his dad approached. As the patrol car pulled away from them and down the road, Derek took a deep breath and hoped that:

 1) he'd be able to get out of this

and

 2) Jess wouldn't hear about it.
