Previous: "You did lose me Derek"

Jess turned her back on Derek and started to walk away. She hoped he wouldn't try to stop her. She hoped that he would keep quiet and just let her leave.

"Jess", Derek called out softly.

Jess heard the leaves crunch under her feet as she took one more step before she stopped.

"Jess, you can't go"

Jess laughed non-humorously and nodded her head. She clenched her jaw and spun back towards him. As soon as she did she was shocked. Derek looked so sad and small standing a few feet away from her. His head was drooped and he looked like an abused puppy. She shook off her thoughts. He had condemned her to a cursed life. He had killed Peter instead of letting her go back to being human again.

"And why not?" She spat.

Derek clenched his fists and lifted his head up so that their eyes met. Tingles went down Jess's spine and she looked away in order to get herself back under control.

"Because you're my mate, Jess", he said breathlessly, like he couldn't believe it himself.

Jess looked at him confused and shook her head.

"What? What are you talking about?"

"You're my mate Jess. Do you know how rare that is to find? You can't just leave. When a werewolf finds a mate he is destined to become an Alpha and his mate a Luna. I have a pack now and..." He stopped to take a step towards Jess, "...and I need you. I need you to stand along side me and help me".

Jess watched as Derek almost pleaded with her. It was sort of amazing. She knew that she should find the mate revelation hard to swallow but it wasn't. She felt as if she had known all along, even when she was human. She had always felt a pull towards him but she still felt the hurt and betrayal from the night he had killed Peter.

As she took a step back both of their hearts broke. Derek's heart broke because he so desperately wanted his mate by his side and Jess's heart broke because she so desperately wanted to be away from him.

"You cared more about becoming alpha then you did about me. You made that very clear and if that is what having a mate means..." She took another step back before turning towards the woods, "I don't want any part of that".

She took a couple steps away from him but he called out again one more time.

"You'll need me", He shouted.

His voice wavered.

Jess didn't turn around and shook her head, "I won't".

"You-You will. The full moon is in two days and you'll need me...and I'll be here waiting for you".

Jess let his words sink in before she finally left him in the forest alone.

Jess walked all the way home thinking about what Derek had said as the night settled around her. She had a mate. That was kind of hard to believe. It wasn't at all hard to believe that it was Derek but it was hard to believe that mates existed. If her parents had still been alive she would've asked them if they believed in soulmates.

She knew exactly what they would have done. They would have looked at each other lovingly and said yes but of course it couldn't be proven that they were meant to be. Apparently Derek was convinced werewolves could. Jess shook her head. Even if it was real it was full of sh*t because Derek had hurt her. You don't hurt people that you love.

She plopped down on her bed suddenly feeling uneasy and weird. Her skin buzzed like electricity was flowing under it and she had the urge to go to the bar and drink. Thats what she was going to do. She was going to go to the bar and drink and flirt and forget all about Derek Hale.

Jess wasn't the type of girl to go out to a bar or a party at all. She much rather preferred to be at home with a glass of wine curled up with a good book or movie, but tonight was different. She felt like there was an itch that needed to be scratched and it was becoming more intense by the second.

Jess whizzed around her room and slid on a small black dress that she had got a long time ago but never had the courage to wear. It was very short and very sexy. It was perfect. As she got ready she forgot about everything that she desperately needed to think about. She forgot about the full moon coming up and the fact that she needed to find Scott. All she could think about was going out on the town. She didn't really even feel like herself at all.

As she slipped on her shoes and grabbed her purse she stopped at the door wondering if she needed to slow down and think about more important matters.

As fast as the moment came, it went and Jess moved out of the doorway and out into the night.
