Previous: As the patrol car pulled away from them and down the road, Derek took a deep breath and hoped that:
1) he'd be able to get out of this
and
2) Jess wouldn't hear about it.
Jess sat in class the next day and waited patiently for the professor to show up. She tapped her foot nervously as she took out a notebook and pen.
She had finally been able to fall asleep last night, however her dreams were plagued with the image of Derek Hale. She had woken up quite disturbed by that fact. She had figured it was because he had been the last person she saw that day and he had scared the daylights out of her but she was still anxious about it for some reason.
As if on cue, she heard someone utter his name and she was quick to snap around and look in that direction.
Two girls sat just a row behind her and were talking lowly.
"Did you hear about Derek Hale?", one of the girls asked.
"Besides the fact that he is still totally hot?", the other girl responded.
Jess tightened her jaw at that. For some reason she felt somewhat possessive of him. It was a strange feeling and Jess immediately pushed it out of her brain.
"Yeah, he may be hot but he is apparently some psycho killer", the first girl responded.
Jess's chest tightened and before she could even register what was happening she spoke, "What happened?".
The two girl's heads snapped towards Jess and they seemed surprised to see she was listening intently to their conversation.
"Uhm...", the first girl started somewhat frazzled by Jess's outburst, "Apparently they found half a body at the old Hale house".
Jess's stomach sank and she felt incredibly nauseous. She spun back around in her seat, towards the front of the large classroom.
"Do you know him?", the second girl had leaned forward so she was right next to Jess's face.
Jess quickly shook her head "no" and bolted up from her seat and about ran out of the classroom.
Jess couldn't believe that she had been with him the previous night. He was a murderer and she had no idea. She knew something was off with him but she didn't think he had killed someone. He could've murdered her in the woods that night and taken her to the old Hale house. Maybe he had planned to do that and changed his mind, she thought. He had said "mine" all creepily. She felt completely overwhelmed and spazzed out.
Jess continued out of the building and down the road. She needed to be home. She almost took the shortcut through the woods but then stopped. Maybe she wouldn't go through the woods this time considering thats where she last saw Derek Hale. She decided against the short cut and continued down the street. She decided that from now on this was the way she was going to go and the short cut was no longer a viable option.
She stuffed her hands down in her pockets as a few cars flew by her on the road. There weren't as many cars as she would expect at this time of the day, but Jess continued on her way. She heard the sound of another car getting ready to pass her but this one didn't.
It slowed down and Jess's pace quickened. Maybe the shortcut would've been better. She kept her head down and eyes locked on the pavement as the car pulled up beside her. She inwardly pleaded for the car to just pass by and turn into one of the driveways on her other side, but it did not.
Jess's stomach turned as she heard the car window slide down and the car continued to roll beside her.
"Get in", a voice rumbled.
Jess jumped and her blood turned ice cold as she recognized the voice.
She looked over to see Derek Hale, in the flesh, leaning over to look out the window at her.
Her first reaction was to take off running. He was a murderer after all and she tried to wrap her mind around the fact that he was out here in the open and not locked in a cell.
Jess didn't run. She just lowered her head back down and picked up a brisker pace.
"No thanks," she muttered, taking to the outside of the pavement, trying to get as far away from him as possible.
"I won't ask again", he said sternly.
Jess stopped in shock and whipped around to him. It was the first time she had looked into his eyes during the exchange and she could feel a tingling sensation wash over her.
"Excuse me?", Jess said crossing her arms and looking around to see if there were any witnesses to his threat-like statement.
Derek winced. He knew she knew about his arrest. It was evident in the way she was acting and speaking towards him. The smell of her fear and agitation was putting Derek in a bad mood. Stiles and Scott were to blame for this change in his mate's behavior and he hated them for it.
"I'm not a murderer, despite the rumors that this crazy town makes up", Derek said popping open his passenger side door as the car stopped when Jess did.
"And that makes me feel so much better. I thought you were in jail", She replied anger lacing her words.
Jess tried hard to act tougher than she really was in this situation, but in reality she was trembling in her boots.
"They let me out this morning"
Jess huffed and turned, walking briskly down the road again. Derek's car rolled beside her as he still leaned over, trying to talk to her.
"Just let me give you a ride to wherever you're going", Derek almost pleaded.
Jess continued walking but raised an eyebrow. It was a long walk to her house and it was made longer by her not taking the short cut. She thought about it for a second but then shook her head 'no'.
"It was an animal", Derek said incredibly sadly.
Jess stopped walking. The pure emotion in his statement rung a chord with her. She looked over to see his face was dark with emotion.
"An animal attacked her", he clarified.
He wasn't lying. He looked up at her and her breath hitched in her throat. He was hurting. Her heart ached for him and before she knew what she was doing, her back touched the leather seats of his car and he reached over her to pull the passenger door closed.
