Previous: Jess nodded and allowed Derek to usher her back into the car.
As soon as they pulled out from under the protection of the gas station, rain started to come in through the broken window and onto Jess. She scooted as close as she could to the middle, which put her close enough to smell Derek's musty scent. It was intoxicating, to say the least.
She looked up at Derek and Derek seemed to know she was looking.
"What?"
"Why did those guys do that?" Jess asked shifting her eyes from Derek to the broken window beside her.
Derek shifted in his seat and waited a few moments to answer. He pursed his lips as he thought of an answer.
"They aren't fond of me", Derek stated pulling into the coffee shop.
Jess huffed and tried again, "Okay...but why?"
Derek parked the car and looked over at Jess seriously.
"Why do you need to know all the answers?"
Jess tilted her head at him, the way he liked, and thought about it.
"I like to know what I'm dealing with", she stated plainly.
Derek chuckled darkly and looked at her in a way that made a pit in her stomach.
"Sometimes its better not to know"
Jess huffed as she got out of the car. It was obvious that Derek was not going to answer her questions the way she wanted him to. She walked into the cafe where she worked and stopped in her tracks. Nobody was in the cafe. She looked around the empty cafe confused. Other cars had been parked outside but no one was here. She walked back to the counter and looked around. None of her co-workers were here. Apparently no one was running the shop at that moment.
Jess rolled her eyes. Her co-workers weren't the most reliable so it was possible they had gone next door for some food when they saw they had no customers.
Jess tied her apron on and as usual, took her spot behind the counter. A few minutes went by before she watched as a car pulled up and a man walked up into the small cafe.
Her breath hitched in her throat as she saw Peter Hale shut the door behind him to the cafe.
"Jess, lovely to see you again", he said flashing her a smile.
Jess couldn't speak. Peter looked different. His eyes were glowing bright red at her and Jess couldn't process what was happening. Her face twisted in fear as he started to take a few steps towards her. She had no explanation as to why his eyes were suddenly glowing red and she didn't really want one.
Peter smile faltered and he tilted his head at her looking somewhat confused.
"Oh," he states blankly and shakes his head twice.
His eyes go back to their green color and his smile returns full force.
"I forget that some people freak out when they see the werewolf eyes, sorry", he said playfully.
Jess grabbed onto the counter tightly. She was feeling extremely lightheaded as her blood pumped furiously throughout her body.
Her eyes flickered to the door that was about five feet behind Peter. She knew she wouldn't be able to make it but maybe that was going to be her only choice.
"Its awfully quiet here today, don't you think?" Peter asked taking another step towards Jess.
Another step away from the door.
Jess swallowed the lump that was in her throat and slid her hand in her pocket. She felt the familiar curve of her phone and hoped she would be able to dial the police somehow.
In a second Peter was beside her 'tsking'.
"Now, we wouldn't want to worry anyone", he said smoothly.
He reached into Jess's pocket and pulled out her phone for her before throwing onto the ground and crushing it with his foot. Jess was mortified and stuck in place. How had he moved so fast?
"Derek will know", Jess said.
Frankly, she had no idea why she had said it at all. She had no idea what Peter was going to do to her but she knew he was dangerous. She also knew that she at least meant something to Derek.
She winced as Peter threw his head back and laughed sharply.
"That's the point, dear"
