Previous: "Go to that one. I have to go to work anyway, and its right after the gas station"
Derek stopped at the gas station and stepped out of the car before flashing Jess a quick glance.
She watched as Derek's eyes studied her face. For the first time, Jess felt self-conscious in front of Derek. Why was he looking at her like that?
Her somewhat confused response was enough to pull Derek out of his daze.
"Don't move", he said before shutting the door.
Jess let out an exasperated sigh. As if he wouldn't eventually find her if she left. He had this weird magnetism to her...It was almost stalkerish. If he had been ten years older and less buff and god-like she would've been more creeped out than she was.
She looked back to see Derek standing next to the pump looking back nervously at her. She furrowed her eyebrows when he threw the car door open and grabbed her arm.
"Get down", he barked.
Jess jumped at not only the order but also at the electricity that surged through her arm. It was enough to stun her for a few moments before she muttered a "what?".
"Get down", he ordered again as another car pulled up.
Jess did as she was told, only because of how seriously Derek had looked at her.
She hunched down as low as she could get in the front seat and tried to get a glimpse as to what had set Derek off.
Several men hopped out of a black van and stood around the back of the car. Jess watched as Derek's jaw clenched and unclenched. One of the men, who looked somewhat familiar to Jess, stepped out of the group and made his way over to Derek.
"Nice car", Chris Argent mused as he strode up to Derek.
He internally cursed at himself. How stupid could he really be. Derek should have known taking Jess around with him would lead to this. The hunters seemed relentless now that people were starting to die.
Derek fought the urge to look back at Jess and make sure she was staying down. He was just going to have to hope that she was smart enough to not get involved.
"Black cars, though", Chris said wiping his finger along the back of Derek's car, "Very hard to keep clean. I would definitely suggest a little more maintenance".
Derek watched as Chris pulled out a squeegee from beside the trash can, trying very hard to keep his cool. Jess couldn't know what he was...not yet.
"If you have something this nice, you want to take care of it, right? Personally, I'm very protective of the things I love. But that's something I learned from my family...and you don't have much of that these days. Do you?" Chris replied eyeing him.
Derek took a deep breath as he felt his nails start to grow. He clenched his hands tight and felt the slicing of his skin against his nails.
"There we go", Chris said squeegeeing off the rest of the water on the windshield and returning the squeegee back to the water bin, "You can actually see through your back windshield now. See how that makes everything so much clearer?".
As Chris turned his back to leave, Derek snuck a quick glance at Jess. She was hunched down like a small child and only her forehead and eyes were visible. If they hadn't been in this situation, he would've smiled. Seeing Jess gave Derek a burst of confidence.
"You forgot to check the oil", Derek said smoothly looking at the backside of Chris.
Chris looked at one of the hunters that was standing next to the black van and nodded at him.
"Check the man's oil"
Derek's breath hitched in his throat as the hunter briskly walked over to the passenger side window and stared at Derek as he broke the window with a crowbar that was in his hand.
Jess.
His heart dropped as he heard her heart beat beat erratically.
"Looks good to me", the hunter said before turning away and hopping into the black van.
Derek didn't move until the van was out of sight. As soon as the van was gone he was over at the passenger door faster than he had ever moved before.
Jess sat petrified on the floor of the passenger side of the car. What the hell just happened? She jumped as Derek threw the door open and assessed the situation.
In an instant, his hands cupped her face as he looked into her eyes.
"Are you okay?" He asked breathy.
He, quite frankly, look like he was gonna have a heart attack.
Jess couldn't respond. She didn't know whether it was the fact she was in shock from the attack or whether it was the fact that Derek held her face so tenderly. It may have been both and the fact she had shards of glass imbedded in her skin.
Derek tilted her head from one way to the other before dropping his head.
"Im so sorry, Jess", he said shaking his head.
Before Jess could even think about what she was doing, her hand cupped the side of his face.
"Why the hell are you apologizing? Those jerks did this. We need to call the police!"
Her mind started working and she removed her hand from his face and started to sit up off the floor of the car. Derek stood back as Jess wiped the glass out of the seat with her hand.
She stood up out of the car and brushed her self off before looking up at Derek.
He looked thoughtfully down at her before running his fingers through the side of her hair.
Jess closed her eyes as the tingling sensation overwhelmed her body.
"Uhm, there was glass", he said, snapping Jess out of it.
She looked up at him frantically, remembering what had just happened.
"They broke your car window! We need to call the police", Jess said reaching into her pocket to grab her cell phone.
Derek grabbed her arm and she instantly snapped her head up.
He shook his head.
"Dont. Trust me, it'll only make it worse", Derek said convincingly.
Jess nodded and allowed Derek to usher her back into the car.
