When Remus Lupin set his daughter off on the enormous, loud, black train to Hogwarts he was nervous. Almost as nervous as when he came out, but not quite. Way back when he was afraid of losing friends, losing respect, losing a sense of safety he'd come to feel at Hogwarts. But now, as he let go of Rebekah's hand and immediately grabbing Sirius's as a replacement, he wasn't afraid. Just nervous. So nervous he was shaking in his socks. He wasn't wearing shoes. Sirius was in such a rush he forgot shoes, and so on the journey to the train station he traded with Remus. Remus had been more than willing to lend his shoes to his husband. 

On any average day Sirius was an absent minded person, but today had been extra special. With their daughter Rebekah leaving to Hogwarts that morning, Sirius had been a hot mess. For weeks he had been planning and obsessing over this morning to make it perfect. He even laid out his clothing for himself three nights before, not that that stopped him from throwing logic out the window. Rebekah's suitcase was another thing thrown out the window in a flurry to get everything together. For this reason, Rebekah was carrying an almost open suitcase with a latch broken in one hand, and a perfect batch of cookies in the other. It turned out her dad was an excellent chef. 

She waved goodbye to them as the train shifted into motion. Sirius had tears in his eyes, which was almost enough to get her crying too. She was a sympathetic crier just like her dad. Remus rubbed his husband's back sympathetically, trying to hold back his own tears. Remus was always the stronger parent, even though he broke down every time Rebekah made a request. In truth, both of them spoiled their daughter to no end. But it was Remus who got the blame in the end. He didn't mind though, because it also meant he got the blame for the excellent human being they had raised.

Remus and Sirius stood there for a while, even after the train had left. Sirius reached into his pocket for a handkerchief for his eyes, but instead pulled out a weightless silver chain. At the end, a quaint charm that had belonged to their daughter.

"Oh look at it Remus," Sirius said fondly, close to tears again. "She left it behind."

Sirius looked off into the distance in the direction the train had left, almost half an hour ago. "Oh, but we have to get it her Moony!" He stepped forward in the same direction he was looking in.

Remus grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back. "Oh come on Padfoot. I know you want to see her, I do too. But a necklace, really?"

"But - But it's her favorite one! What's she going to do without it?"

"She'll be just fine. Besides, I saw you swipe it from her trunk. Now if she were gonna miss it so much, you wouldn't have tried to use it against me."

"I would never do such a thing!" Protested Sirius.

"Remember last year when she spent the summer with Molly's kids? You tried to use her pillow to convince me we had to go all the way over there."

"And she was overjoyed when she saw it!"

"She was so red from embarrassment I thought she'd stopped breathing!" Remus chuckled and shook his head. "C'mon. We'll send an owl."

"Fine."

Remus smiled at his husband, content with their life in that moment. He hadn't even given the Ministry officials waiting outside in poorly matched muggle clothing a second thought. He hadn't realized what was going on until he saw his beloved husband being dragged away from him. He could only hear yelling and the feeling of magic boiling in his blood. In his fury, he almost used an unforgivable curse. He felt them casting a spell on him and only when the silence was clear did he realize he was the one screaming. Sirius cried for a second time that day, and from his hand the necklace dropped to the ground.
