The museum was only one area under attack. All around the district, police officers and ETRF members came under simultaneous assault from the Evolved of the Crimson Fall. Within hours, the streets ran red with the blood of combatants from both sides. Sunrise was greeted with a multitude of billowing smoke pillars.
The light of morning brought no comfort for those who fought for their survival. One particular platoon had been reduced to civilian volunteers in the ETRF and a couple of police officers.
"They just keep coming!" A tall young woman with tanned skin, blue eyes, and purple-dyed hair yelled as she covered her allies' retreat. She and a cop with a borrowed rifle took aim and fired in bursts. Two of the Evolved took a full metal jacket round to the face and fell dead. A few others staggered mid-charge, only for their wounds to heal in a matter of seconds.
