Chapter 014A
Notes: Surprise! I managed to write this chapter quickly about the final basketball match. Enjoy. (hcpoirot)
Both team got few minutes of warming up before the match begin. Coach gave the team final instruction and pep talk.
"Remember to guard no 2 and no 7. They are team Economy ace players. Don't let them shoot the ball easily. Enjoy the play and support each other on the court."
Wad came back to the court and did not heard any of coach advice. He still felt very disturbed of what happened in the restroom
Wad, Em , Tiw and two other friends were the team starter. Meanhwile Kongpope sat on the reserve bench.
Wad cannot focus on playing. He made rookie mistake from the start. He was impatient and his balls got stolen. He failed to scored from few easy shots. He even touched the opponent player that was in act of shooting the ball. That mistake gave the Economy team two free throws *. Engineering team trailed 0-10 and the match only begin.
"What are you doing, Wad?" hissed Em, the team captain. " You don't play like your normal self. "
"Just forget earlier mistakes, Wad. Start fresh again," said Tiw , another teammates pat his shoulder.
No 7 Pon , from opposing team shoot the two free throws. Both went in. Two points. Now they were behind 0-12.
Economy cheerleaders squad were celebrating with dancing on the side. Their supporters were clapping hard.
"Tiw is right, Wad," added Em. "Just focus on this match and forget about anything else. All of us believe in you." he smile encouragingly and slapped Wad back .
Wad let out a roar. They are right. He cannot be distracted by what happened years ago. This match is right now and he had support from his friends.
After that, he played much better. He gained his concentration and confidence back. Wad succesfully blocked many attacks from the rivals. He was brilliant in rebound and kept scoring points. Meanwhile Em and Tiw passing combo on the perimeter kept confusing the other team players and donate scores.Their tight defense specially guarding no 2 and no 7 made the opponents failed to score many times.
After two quarters**, Engineering team lead with 45-33.
Disaster struck at middle of the third quarter. Wad felt pain on his right leg. He tried to ignored it and kept running. But the pain was too intense so he had to be replaced by Kongpope. Coach checked his leg and said he got leg cramps. He told Wad to use the pain relieving spray on his leg and rest.
Kongpope who only played very little during the whole competition , started nervously. His defense was weak and his passes was easy to read. Few times, his ball got stolen. The Economy team compete much better and catching up the scores.
When the third periods over, Engineering only won by a point with 52-51.
On the last quarter, Kongpope improved his play. He managed to decrease the errors and even shot a ball into the hoop. The whole team play all out to get the win. But their rivals team who can sense victory did not slack off. They kept the pressure and scoring with their ace players no 2 and no 7, Pon.
11 second left. Economy team turn the table and lead by 65-63.
Engineering Coach called a time out and plan a strategy. He also called for changing player. No 12 will be replaced by no 8 Wad. The supporters were puzzled. Why play Wad again who was in pain minutes ago? Are they trying to lose the match? Are the Coach lost his mind?
The clock start ticking to zero countdown. Engineering got the ball possesion. Captain Em threw it to Tiw. Tiw was running and dribble the ball to the center court . He sent it to Kongpope who stand near the three point line.
Five second left.
Their supporters groaned loudly. Kongpope was not very good at three points shoot Not to mention no 7 Pon , was in front of Kongpope , guarding him like a hawk. Can he make a miracle throw?
Kongpope faked a throw but in reality he quickly passed the ball to the far left side of the perimeter. Wad was already waiting there.
No 7 Pon realised then, he had been fooled. Kongpope was not the shooter, he was just the pawn . no 8 Wad was the real last shooter. He try to leap over at where Wad was , with his arm reaching out , try to blocked no 8 . But it was too late.
Wad was in position. His feet stand outside the three point line.
Two second left.
He remembered P'Prem teaching about how to do a proper three point throw. He calmly jumped and shot the ball.
The stadium was silent. All spectators hold their breath. As if in a slow motion moved, they watched Wad's three point throw. The Engineering supporters hoping the ball went in. Their rivals hoping the opposite result.
In or out? Win or lost?
And the ball was ...

*free throw = a throw attempt from the free throw line / the charity stripe unopposed from the opponents. Generally awarded after a foul on the shooter by the opposing team. Each successful throw = 1 point.
