"what should we do?" asked jack as i flopped back on the squishy sofa."i don't know. all my things are in there, including my phone, so i don't even know if my mum's calling me." i sighed. "i'm fucked."
jack chuckled. "you'll be fine, sweetheart. if she gives you trouble, send her to me and i'll explain the situation."
i smiled at him. "fuck, really? thankyou so much."
he smiled, his cheeks turning slightly pink. "it's okay." he replied.
i glanced around, looking for that red-haired waiter from before. unfortunately, he had scurried inside the ballroom before the doors had closed.
"i wish i had another drink." i pouted, looking sadly at my empty glass.
jack walked off, hands in his pockets and i frowned. i stood up and saw him jumping over the bar counter.
he stood up and dusted himself off. i walked over, giggling.
"what can i get for you, lovely lady?" he asked, smirking at me.
"i'll have... a scotch and soda." i requested, taking a seat on one of the bar stools.
"coming right up." jack stated, grabbing a glass from under the counter.
i watched in awe as he quickly mixed together the drink. he slid it across the counter.
"there you are, sweetheart." he grinned. i grabbed the glass and took a sip, before smiling back.
"what's the charge?" i asked.
jack smirked before leaning over the counter. "one kiss." he simply stated.
i rolled my eyes but smiled, before i leaned forward and briefly pecked his lips.
he pouted as i pulled away. "that's all? how many drinks do i have to make for a proper kiss?"
i laughed and took another sip. "just keep them coming and you'll find out." i joked and he smirked.
jack lined up a few shots of vodka for himself, before quickly draining them all within seconds.
he then jumped back over the counter and took a seat on the bar stool next to me.
i took another sip as he gazed at me. "what?" i asked, frowning slightly.
he shrugged. "nothing." he stated with a cheeky grin.
i rolled my eyes again before draining my glass. "all gone." i stated sadly.
"well i can make you another, but you'll have to pay upfront." jack smirked.
i giggled and was just leaning in when i heard my name being called.
"ruby? ruby!"
i quickly pulled away from jack and left the bar, running to the foyer to see luke standing there, looking worried.
"jesus, ruby! mum and i were scared shitless." he stated.
i raised my eyebrows and folded my arms.
"okay, well i was scared shitless." luke told me, panting slightly.
"that sounds more accurate." i laughed. "how did you get out?"
"i asked one of the waiters to go to the bathroom. i was hoping you'd be out here and not half way across town."
i laughed again.
"come on, we should go back. mum isn't happy." luke grabbed my wrist gently and began to pull me away.
"why am i not surprised." i remarked, going with him.
i glanced back to see jack leaning against a wall with his arms folded. he winked at me and i blushed.
luke knocked on the door and it was opened by the red-haired waiter from before. he raised his eyebrows at me as we marched past him.
"where have you been?!" my mother snapped, trying to stay quiet to not attract attention. "luke was worried sick!"
i sighed. "sorry mother. i went to the bathroom and got locked out." i responded honestly.
she scowled and turned away as luke and i sat down. he quickly began to talk to isabelle again as i sat there, gazing down at my place card.
the doors were opened and everyone glanced over. jack was stood in the doorway, hands in his pockets and a stony gaze.
"darling!" helen exclaimed, jumping up as he walked over to our table. "where were you? you missed the food!"
my stomach grumbled and he glanced over and shot me a smirk.
"i went for a smoke and got locked outside." he lied smoothly.
helen's face fell. "i thought you were trying to quit."
he shrugged. "once a while won't hurt me." jack stated, making me smile lightly.
she placed her hand on his arm, and i saw the sight of the gold band wrapped around her finger, topped with a diamond.
fuck. fuck. fuck. forgot about that.
"let's just sit down. these are the robinson's. i've been talking to them and they own a mansion up in the hills!" helen exclaimed.
jack nodded and sat down, a smile on his face. but within minutes of talking, he had the same bored expression that i had.
i quickly nudged luke and he turned to me. "is there going to be dessert?" i whispered.
he chuckled. "you missed that too." my face dropped. "it was chocolate soufflé."
my eyes widened. "and you didn't save me any?!" i whispered loudly.
my mother looked over at us with a stern glare. luke smiled apologetically at her.
"look, i'm sure we'll find something in the fridge at home that you can have." he quickly muttered.
i sighed as he turned away. i glanced across the table to see jack watching me again.
he shot me a wink and i felt my cheeks heat up. he smirked at the effect he had on me.
betty stood up and clapped her hands together. "alright, everyone! this concludes this month's meeting. i will be sending out an email with the date for the next one. i hope to see you all there."
i clapped along with everyone else, because i knew if i didn't then my mum would strangle me.
luke and i stood up, looking over at our mother. she picked up her bag and took her time getting to her feet.
we quickly said our goodbyes. jack walked over to me and shook my hand, before leaning in and whispering in my ear.
"i'll be seeing you sooner than next month, sweetheart."
unable to think of an answer, i smiled and walked away, following my brother and mother to the door.
