jack
i was sat on my couch, a half-burnt cigarette in my hand.

it had been several days since that god-awful function and i couldn't stop thinking about it.

i can't do that to jayden; it would break his heart.

that's what she said.

that one fucking sentence wouldn't stop replaying, over and over, in my head.

i took another drag from my cigarette, blowing the smoke out and sighing.

why does everything have to be so fucked?

i should've just dumped helen the moment i met ruby. then we could've been together and none of this would've happened.

i ran a hand through my hair.

goddammit. i need to get my mind off of her.

pulling my phone out, i scrolled through my apps to find tinder. i'd had it downloaded for a while, but after making my profile and chatting to a few girls, i realised how awful it was.

but right now, i was desperate.

i continually swiped right, match upon match appearing on my screen. messages began to pop up in my inbox.

i opened the first one from a girl named kirsty. all she'd written was hello, which i quickly replied to, before scrolling through her pictures.

i grimaced, before pressing the unmatch button.

moving on to the next girl, who looked a hell of a lot more appealing.

jack: hey babe. wanna fuck?

bluntness was my speciality.

i grinned at her response. she seemed very keen. we arranged to meet up at a nearby bar.

i quickly pulled on some shoes and a jacket, grabbed my wallet and i was out the door. i decided to just walk, since it was so close, and set off into the night air.

i arrived at the dimly lit bar, glancing around to see if she was already here.

in the corner, sat a girl in a red dress, sipping on what looked to be a martini.

i glanced at my phone. it was her.

i strode over, sitting in the seat opposite. she didn't look up.

"sorry, but i'm-" she glanced at me. "oh, it's you! i thought you were some desperate creep."

she grinned widely.

i took in her appearance. she had very clearly used a lot of hairspray in her poorly dyed hair. her lashes were overly coated with black mascara, with red lipstick smeared around her small lips.

she was leaning over the table, her breasts practically falling out of her low-cut dress.

in short, it seemed as if she was the desperate one.

i smiled thinly. i was only here to get ruby out of my thoughts.

"i'm going to get a drink. would you like another?" i offered politely.

she drained the rest of her martini, then nodded.

i walked over to the bar and ordered a beer, for myself, and a martini. i handed the bartender the correct cash, then grabbed the drinks and strolled back to her.

after i set down her martini, she immediately picked it up and downed half of the glass.

i raised my eyebrows.

"so, where are you from?" she asked, batting her eyelashes at me.

"do you really want to know?" i replied, taking a sip of my beer.

she shrugged. "not really. just trying to make some conversation."

i rolled my eyes. i was going to need a lot more alcohol to go through with this.

———

"and she's just so great, you know?" i whined, desperately clutching my sixth beer. "but she doesn't want me anymore! she just wants jayden." i scowled.

the girl let out a fake laugh. she was just as drunk as i was, if not more so.

"little bastard!" i slurred. "he doesn't deserve her. she should be mine!"

she placed her hand on top of mine.

"d-do you wanna go back to m-my house?" she hiccuped.

i immediately nodded. "you know, i-i would just love that. it sounds g-great."

finishing my beer, i stood up and almost immediately had to grab the table to steady myself. the girl linked her arm around mine and we both stumbled out of the bar together.

her house wasn't far away, but it managed to take us well over twenty minutes, as she kept having to stop so she could throw up.

by the time we got to hers, she was a wailing mess. i helped her to the bathroom, where she sunk down next to the toilet and refused to get up.

i stumbled into the lounge and flopped down on her couch. grabbing a pillow, i snuggled up against it.

i pulled my phone out of my pocket, squinting at the bright screen. i went into my contacts, scrolled down and dialled her number. i held the phone to my ear and waited.

"h-hello?" she sounded tired.

"ruby? it's you!" i cheered.

she yawned. "jack? what the hell are you doing? it's one in the morning."

"i j-just wanted to tell you something!" i exclaimed giddily.

"what?" she sighed.

"i-i love you!"

"jack, you don't mean that." she replied softly. "you're clearly very drunk."

"no, no! i mean it!" i hiccuped. "i love you! more than j-jayden does! you shouldn't be with him a-anymore!"

"go to sleep, jack."

"y-you know, i've spent tonight with a-another girl in a bar, t-trying my hardest to get over you. but i-i can't! i really can't!"

"what're you talking about?"

"i-i mean, i can't s-stop thinking about you! your face, your body, y-your laugh..." i frowned. "i miss your laugh. you n-never laugh anymore! i-is that because of me?"

"jack, i don't want to talk about this. especially when you're intoxicated."

"d-do you hate me?"

she sighed again. "no, i don't. not at all."

"d-do you want me t-to leave you alone?"

"no, jack. not completely."

i felt myself grinning. "g-great!"

"but right now, you need to sleep." she let out another yawn. "and so do i. we can talk about this later, okay?"

"o-okay." i replied. "i love you!"

i was met with the dial tone, indicating she'd hung up.

tossing my phone onto the floor, i curled up on the couch and closed my eyes, letting sleep consume me.
