"and remember when nancy-" my wife helen reminisced as i zoned out.we were at a dumb carnival she dragged me to, with the excuse being 'it'll be fun'.
i folded my arms. "how much longer is this going to take?" i asked, interrupting her story.
"well, we have to wait before we can ride the ride, darling." she explained.
"no shit. i'm not five, helen." i snapped, making her eyes widen.
i glanced around the park, scoffing at all the happy families and couples, until one couple in particular caught my eye.
"ruby..." i muttered.
"what was that, dear?" helen asked curiously, looking in the same direction as me.
"oh, nothing, nothing." i lied, nervously laughing. she laughed along with me.
i looked over again to see her taking his hand and leading him away. that blonde bastard.
was that nate?
i frowned to myself.
"helen, i'm just going to the bathroom. i'll be back in a minute." i told helen, before quickly jumping out of line and following them.
i watched as he handed the stall keeper money and then began to toss small, rubber balls at tin cans perched on top of each other.
after several tries, he knocked all six down in one go and she cheered. the stall keeper passed over a giant pink elephant, which she took, her eyes shining with joy like a child.
i found myself smiling. not at the scene before me, but at her. she was just so beautiful, so precious, so innocent...
my scowl resumed as he leaned forward and kissed her cheek.
holding hands, they walked away from the stall and in the direction of the exit.
i quickly followed and watched as he helped her put her helmet on, then climbed onto a red and black motorcycle. they drove away and i sighed.
"fuck." i muttered to myself, running a hand through my hair.
i slowly walked back to the ride where my wife was stood in line, to find her chatting with an elderly man.
they were both smiling flirtatiously at each other and i rolled my eyes.
gold digger.
i inserted myself back into the line and next to my wife, not bothering to even look at the man when my wife introduced him to me.

"all you have to do is knock down those six cans in one hit." the stall keeper explained to jayden, who nodded.i watched as he threw twice, missing on both shots. he threw the third ball and i squealed as it knocked down all six cans.
"here you go. congrats buddy." the stall keeper handed jayden the giant pink elephant i had my eyes on.
jayden gave it to me, smiling, and i hugged him. "thankyou!" i exclaimed, cuddling my new elephant. "her name's ellie."
he leaned forward and quickly kissed my cheek, taking me by surprise, but i liked it nonetheless.
he chuckled. "would you wanna go home now?" he offered, taking my hand. i nodded and we walked towards the exit.
he gently helped me put on my helmet again and i smiled.
i watched as jayden quickly tied the plushie to the back of his motorbike before climbing on. he offered me his hand and i took it, climbing on behind him.
wrapping my arms around him tightly, we set off again. i was more used to the speed this time, but it was still incredibly fun.
within another twenty minutes, we were back at my house and i was dismounting the bike.
"thankyou so much jayden. i had a really nice day." i smiled at him as he took his helmet off.
jayden grinned and ran a hand through his blond shaggy hair. "anytime, beautiful. i'll text you, okay?"
i nodded. he leaned in and i closed my eyes, waiting. after a few seconds of nothing, i opened them to see he had moved away and his cheeks were bright red.
i smiled to myself before leaning over to him and kissing his cheek.
"bye jayden." i squeezed his hand, before grabbing my elephant walking away. i let myself into the house and then turned to see my mother with a very angry expression.
"ruby dahlia, where have you been?" she exclaimed, sounding scarily like molly weasley from harry potter.
"uh, out?" i said nervously. i already knew that answer wouldn't cut it.
she swelled up with rage. "no call, no note! your brother said you had no explanation, you just waltzed out the door."
i glanced past her and glared at luke, who mouthed the word 'sorry'.
"i was out, mum. with a friend." i explained.
she frowned. "a boy? you know i don't want you talking with boys. you're too young."
"mum, i'm seventeen." i replied pleadingly.
"a-ha! you were with a boy!" my mother exclaimed, pointing at me. "and what is this ludicrous item?" she snapped.
i protested as she grabbed my elephant from me.
"no need for things like this. i'll take this outside to the trash."
"but, mum-" i desperately tried to think of something to say. "he won it for me. it's special."
my mother scoffed. "special? the boy's clearly just trying to get in your pants."
she stalked off, my elephant in her hands. its large purple eyes looked at me sadly.
"sorry, ruby. didn't think she'd go that crazy." luke said quietly as we both watched her go.
i sighed. "why did i expect anything different?" i stated, walking up the stairs and into my room. "she's never going to change."
images of me as a forty year old woman on a date with my mother in the background flashed before me and i shuddered.
i picked up my phone and glanced at it.
jack - i saw you today
jack - you looked beautiful
jack - and happy...
jack - but i could make you happier
ruby - go make your wife happier
satisfied with my response, i switched off my phone and crawled into bed, closing my eyes.
