"jayden, i..."

he looked at me with worried eyes. "you regret it, don't you?"

i immediately shook my head. "no, no, i just wanted to say," i sighed and leant my head on his shoulder. "thankyou."

he lifted my chin up using his finger. "anytime, love. i care about you a lot and i want to make you happy." leaning in, he kissed me gently.

i smiled. "you care about me, huh?" i teased, poking his cheek.

he chuckled. "yeah. you could say maybe i even..." he then paused.

"you what?" i egged him on. i think i knew what he was going to say and i wanted him to.

"i... i, uh... i love you."

my eyes widened. for a few seconds, i sat there, staring at him, gobsmacked.

"r-ruby?" jayden asked, concerned.

i jumped forward and kissed him. "i love you too." i whispered.

his face brightened. "really?"

i nodded and he hugged me tightly. as he pulled away, i noticed him frowning slightly.

"what is it?" i asked, concerned.

"i was just thinking..." he trailed off. "who was that guy in the park yesterday?"

i froze.

i need to come up with something quick. i can't tell him the truth.

"he's my, uh, ex boyfriend." i stated. it wasn't a total lie.

jayden slowly nodded. "and what were you guys talking about?"

"i told him... that we are never getting back together." i said.

he cracked a smile. "like ever?"

we both then screamed. "n-oooooooooo. we are never ever ever getting back together!"

i laughed and lay back on my bed.

"but seriously, there's nothing between you two right? no competition for me?" jayden joked, lying next to me.

i rolled over to face him. "of course not." i leaned forward and kissed him briefly.

"what do you want to do today?" he asked me, running a hand through his hair.

i shrugged. "dunno. my mother might have plans." i rolled my eyes.

"well, either way i get to see you so it's a win-win for me." jayden smirked.

i rolled my eyes but smiled all the same.

"knowing her she'll drag me to some tea party with all of her posh friends and expect me to behave like a perfect princess." i sighed. "then whatever i do, she and all her friends will judge me."

jayden pulled me into a hug. "who cares what they think?" he whispered in my ear.

i smiled and wriggled away from him. "i could get banished." i giggled. "then you'd never see me again."

he chuckled and slowly began to leave a trail of kisses down my neck.

"we'd find a way." i felt him smirk against my skin.

next to us, his phone started ringing and i heard jayden sigh, clearly annoyed.

he picked up the phone.

"hello ma'am." he paused. "yes, of course." another pause. "yes, i'll be there in ten."

i pouted as he hung up and looked over at me.

"can you guess who it was?" he joked. i frowned and cuddled up next to him.

"do you have to go?"

"well, if i wanna keep my job, then yeah i think i do." he smirked.

"screw your job! just stay here and cuddle with me all day." i pleaded.

he leaned down and kissed my forehead. "no can do, babe. your mum wants the three of you at the emerald café in..." he glanced at his watch. "eight minutes."

i sighed as he stood up.

he grabbed his jeans from the floor and slid into them, before picking up his shirt.

"w-wait."

he turned to me with a grin. "what now?"

"can't you just... not put a shirt on?" i asked. i was being slightly serious but he chuckled all the same.

"i'll see you later, alright?" he promised, grabbing his things before kissing me and quickly leaving my room.

not even five minutes after he was gone, luke poked his head through my doorway.

"why did jayden stay the night?" he asked curiously.

i smiled guiltily. "don't tell mum."

he smirked. "you've got five minutes." he replied, walking back to his room.

i hurriedly pulled on a pair of ripped black jeans and a pastel pink knit jumper with some black vans.

there was no time for a full face of makeup, so i quickly fixed up my brows and applied some mascara before grabbing my phone and jogging downstairs.

my mother was sat on an armchair, lazily flicking through tv channels. she glanced up at me.

"you're early." she commented. "for once."

"ready to go, mother?" luke asked, walking downstairs. he was dressed in black skinny jeans and a plain black t-shirt.

"you're both dressed appallingly." my mother snapped. "skinny jeans? to the emerald café?" she huffed.

we both looked at each other and shrugged.

"come. we don't have time." she clapped her hands and i rolled my eyes.

i followed her out the door and down to the car, where jayden was stood, waiting.

"hey." he whispered to me, planting a sneaky kiss on my cheek. fortunately, luke and my mother didn't see anything.

i smiled and climbed into the car.

"i'm in the mood for duck today..." my mother stated absentmindedly as the car started.

"they have duck salad on the menu, mother." luke inputted.

i shot him a look and he gave me one back.

he was trying to get back into her good books after her clothing comment.

"i know, sweetheart." my mother commented tiredly.

i sat in my seat, playing with one of the frayed pieces of string from my jeans. i wasn't paying too much attention to my mother and luke's conversation, until she said something that made my blood run cold.

"oh i forgot to tell you two!" my mother exclaimed. "i've invited mr and mrs gilinsky over for dinner tonight. i thought it would be nice to get to know them a little better."
