ruby
"what happened tonight?" luke asked me, frowning as we walked out of the restaurant.i glanced at him. "what're you talking about?" i questioned.
"you went to the bathroom for like half an hour. and mr gilinsky only came back after you did." he stated.
i opened my mouth, trying to think of an excuse. "i-i got my period." i blurted out.
"ruby!" my mother exclaimed as she slid into the car. "how dare you talk about such un-ladylike things in public!"
"sorry." i muttered.
luke followed her into the car and just as i was about to sit down, i saw jack casually walk past us with his wife.
he shot me a smile and a wink. i sat down, my cheeks pale pink as i closed the door.
luke struck up conversation with my mother as i gazed out of the window, thinking about earlier.
"those'll be $14.50." the bartender stated, handing us our drinks. jack quickly paid and we sat down in one of the nearby booths.
thankfully, we were out of sight of my mother, luke and helen.
"can't believe you remembered." i giggled, sipping my scotch and soda.
jack chuckled and kissed my cheek. "how could i forget?"
he wrapped his arm around me, almost protectively and i rested my head on his shoulder.
"sweetheart, can you get me a refill?" jack asked a few minutes later. "i've just gotta go piss."
i nodded and walked over to the bar to order another drink.
"hey there, pretty lady." i heard a man say. i turned to see a middle-aged, slightly chubby and clearly drunk man standing way too close to me.
"uh, hi." i replied, looking away, hoping he would get the message.
"so, can i buy you a drink?" he offered, grinning at me. his teeth were bright yellow.
i immediately shook my head. "no, thankyou." i responded.
"oh, come on." he persisted. "perhaps maybe you'd like to come back to my place instead?"
i glared at him. "no. i'm with someone." i snapped.
he laughed. "well, perhaps you can ditch him for tonight, eh?"
his hand touched my shoulder and i shuddered. "please leave me alone." i said nervously.
"no can do, lady. you're coming home with me." he said sternly, grabbing my arm.
"get off me!" i exclaimed, hitting him repeatedly. he only laughed.
all of a sudden, i saw someone jump in front of me and punch the old man square in the jaw. he let go of my arm and staggered backwards.
"i believe she said no." jack snapped at him. "and if you don't leave right now, i swear to god i'll break your skull."
the man scowled and walked away. jack immediately pulled me into a tight hug.
"are you alright?" he asked worriedly. "i'm so so sorry. i shouldn't have left you alone in a bar. god i'm an idiot."
i hugged him back. "it's okay. i'm okay. just a bit shaken up."
i went to move away but he held me tight and i wasn't complaining. he was so protective.
"come on." he grabbed his drink from the bar and we sat down again.
his arm was still protectively around me and he glared at every guy who dared to come close.
"i don't think i ever asked, what're you doing here?" jack asked me.
"mum wanted to go out for dinner. she never cooks for us." i told him. "i don't think she even knows how."
he chuckled. "i'll cook for you sometime, okay sweetheart?"
i felt myself glowing. i loved that name.
jack glanced around. "i'm not a huge fan of this place. more into cheap, easy food like we had last night. but helen loves it, so we come here."
i sighed quietly. i hated her. she got to be with him and i had to hide.
"i'm thinking it all over, okay?" he murmured in my ear. "but trust me, one day we won't have to hide."
it was like he read my mind.
"so, when's our next date?" jack asked, smirking.
i rolled my eyes. "when's the next time you're going to climb through my window?"
"feisty." he chuckled. "i like it." he kissed my forehead, making me smile.
i snuggled up closer to him, taking a sip of my drink.
"do you think i should dye my hair?" jack asked randomly.
i frowned. "what colour?"
"blonde. i dunno, i think it'd look good." he shrugged.
i raised my eyebrows. "please don't." i begged, running my hand through his soft, dark hair.
he chuckled. "i'll think about it."
i wasn't keeping track of the time, then jack looked at his watch and raised his eyebrows.
"shit, you've been in the bathroom for thirty minutes. you better get back." he told me.
i quickly nodded and stood up. jack gently placed a kiss on my lips before i smiled and walked away.
"ruby?" i snapped out of my trance and stared at luke, who had one eyebrow raised.
"um, what was the question?" i asked nervously.
my mother sighed, clearly exasperated.
"are you alright with having next weekend to yourself whilst your brother and i are away?" she repeated impatiently.
i immediately nodded. "yeah, of course." i smiled at her.
"alright. but no parties." she snapped warningly.
i nodded again. "of course not."
"good. i don't want a bunch of drunk, horny adolescents running around my house." she stated.
i smiled. "yes, mother."
all i needed was one person.
i pulled out my phone and texted him.
ruby - are you free next weekend?
jack - i am if you want me to be x
ruby - mum and luke are leaving me alone for three days
jack - i'm there xx
i giggled quietly. luke glanced over at my phone curiously.
"who're you texting?" he asked, trying to take my phone.
"no one!" i immediately exclaimed.
he rolled his eyes. clearly he didn't believe me, but he stopped pestering me for the rest of the ride.
