In the 3 years since the attack on New York everything has been relatively fine. Well, as fine as it could be. Everyone had been shaken, to say the least, after extra-terrestrials fell from the sky in an attempt to destroy the planet but the Avengers had taken care of it and swept it under the rug before anyone could really ask what the hell had just happened. Then they had disappeared.
The Avengers was disbanded to anyone who asked but if you had enough clearance it was a whole different story. They stayed in touch, helping each other out when they could and sometimes Nick Fury would even request them to go on missions. But it was quiet nothing really big happened.
SHEILD was bigger and if it was possible even more secretive. They kept their watchful eye on the world looking out for any threats to the earth and/or their solar system and to its inhabitants. So when the machines start going crazy and every available scientist can’t place nor explain what a source of energy is, nothing is going to quiet. Not for a long time.
