Month 1, Week 1

The Worst Day Ever

The weather was horrible. It was raining cats and dogs, with thunder that sends a deafening roar through your system, and lightning that lights the whole sky.

It was that kind of ominous and mysterious weather that gave you an odd feeling. With its star-less sky, with the only source of light being the lightning. The darkness is everywhere, the rain pounds against the roof, and the sound of thunder consumes you.

It was the king of weather that you see in a movie and it gives you a very bad feeling. It makes you want to start screaming and yelling at the character on screen, 'Don't go in there!' But, of course, they don't listen to you. And then, they realize just a little too late, the consequences of the fatal mistake they have just made. With the hints given by the ominous weather, you know something terrible is about to happen, but by the time they've realized it . . . it's too late. Something terrible just happened.

I guess I should've known.

I'm so bored.

The summer vacation has just started, and I should be having the time of my life, right? I am fresh out of my third year, my junior year, of high school, and I need to seize my chance to live a little and have fun before I am forced to become a "responsible" senior. But, of course, I won't let being a senior stop me from having fun.

My sixteen-year-old sister, Skylar, will soon be a junior in high school, and she has her best friend, Ashley, over. I tried to have my best friend, Elena, over, but she wasn't able to make it: something about things to do with the family. I don't know, I wasn't really listening when she told me her excuse for why she couldn't come. I was too consumed with the fact that she couldn't come over in the first place, facing the fact that I will be bored out of my mind and very lonely.

I guess I could go hang out with Ashley and Skylar, but I don't want to push my company on them again. Whenever Elena can't come over, I usually do go to hang out with them, but I figure that, this time, I will just leave them alone.

Skylar and I always try to have Ashley and Elena come over at the same time, because we are all really close, and we are all friends, but it doesn't always work out that way. We always try to get together at our house, just because Ashley likes to get away from her house, and our mom is the least strict, and she will let us do practically whatever we want . . . within reason.

I was really looking forward to having Ashley and Elena over, too. It was the first time we would be hanging out with our friends this summer. Then, when my plans with Elena fell through, Skylar still went through with her plans to have Ashley over. Which I don't really mind, by the way, I just wish Elena were here. Maybe I should text her.

I'm lying on the couch as some mindless TV program drones on and on. I lift my head slightly, my hazel eyes searching for my cell phone. Aha, there it is! Right there, on the corner of our mahogany coffee table, a few feet away from the couch. My face falls as I realize something. That's so far away. I out-stretch my arm as far as it could go, my fingertips are mere inches from my phone . . . just a little bit farther. I nearly fall off the couch from trying to reach so far, so I just give up. Maybe I'll just take a nap. I smirk slightly at the thought of how lazy I am being today.

I close my eyes, attempting to block out the pounding rain and the roaring thunder, until I hear loud footsteps descending the stairs. This startles me so much that I nearly fall off the couch again. It was only Skylar and Ashley racing down the stairs. They enter the living room, where I am, and keep walking, Skylar's car keys jingling in her hand.
