Heart Beat

How fickle is the heart,
One day it beats
Slow and steady;
Unaware of anything
One continues ahead.

Then one day
Out of the blue,
Without any warning
It jumps, missing a beat
At a peculiar sight.

And in that moment
As one stops dead
To carefully analyze
A meaning, for a reason,
Which is all too clear.

It happened mysteriously
An action beyond control
In no sense expected
After all it was a fancy
Which the heart decided to indulge.

One may add
It was foolish
Completely uncalled for,
And most of all
An unexpected unknown.

Yet it was too soon
The picture was unclear,
Why now?
This person beside me
Close enough to touch.

Why must the heart feel
The need to Love?
It makes one selfish
And causes many aches
Mixed with insecurities.

It forces tough decisions
To become Brave
Act on the feeling
Take the jump
Attempt to take flight.

Or else, another option,
Live as a coward.
Endure the pain
Gaining nothing,
By not venturing forth.

Soon a plague of
"What if...?"
Shall come one by one,
Each one sharper
Than the last.

Wisely or perhaps not
A choice must be made
Between two opposites;
Only one choice
One single chance.

Choose bravery:
Along with one single
Large amount of pain
Which eventually will
Scar and heal to accept an end.

A choice of cowardice:
Will find continuous pain,
Along with a loss
As one watches and hopes
While time idly goes by.

How nice it would be
A choice of Bravery
When a coward leaps
All the while hoping
Somehow they'll survive.

The fear one feels
Inching close to the one,
The one person, whom with
No concrete logical reason
The heart chose to love.

How utterly terrifying
Yet how wonderful
The strength needed
Just to utter out loud
Three simple words.
