Just A Kiss (Rilaya)

In the Bay Window

Maya's POV:

I follow Josh into Riley's bedroom and sit down in my usual spot in the Bay Window.

I don't know what to say, so I exhale loudly.

"So...uh..." Josh says.

"Look," I say, "you came all the way here, and it's obviously not just because you wanted to say hi. So don't just sit there and pretend not to know what to say."

"You're right," Josh says, "what I'm really here for is...to tell you...that I actually think I do like you."

My mouth opens in surprise.

"I'm sorry," Josh says, "this is really sudden. But I've been thinking, a lot. And...you don't have to say anything. I just felt like I should tell you."

I bite my bottom lip, not knowing what to say. I've liked Josh since forever, but now, the time he finally decides that he likes me back, I don't feel anything.

Josh starts to get up, but I tug on the sleeve of his coat.

"Don't leave." I say.

"Okay." Josh says, sitting back down.

"So...the dance I'm going to tonight...I was just planning on going with Farkle, but..." I say, hoping that Josh will take the hint that I wanted him to offer to go to the dance with me.

"Uh...Maya, I...don't think that would be okay. I mean, I'm three year-" Josh says, but I cut him off.

"Yeah, yeah," I say, "the whole 'I'm three years older than you' excuse. Josh, you just said you liked me. I think it would be okay if we went to the dance together. You know...as friends."

Josh looks down at his lap. "Well, I guess..."

I smile at him as he looks up at me, and he smiles back.

Maybe tonight won't be so bad after all. I think to myself.
