Maya's POV:
I throw my coat on the floor of my bedroom and plop down on my bed, checking my phone before I get ready to go to sleep.
I click on the message app and see that I have two new messages. One from Riley and one from...Josh.
I decide to look at Riley's first because it was from three minutes ago.
Riley 💘: Thanks for taking me home❤️
I type:
Will you be ok?
And press send.
After it gets delivered I look at Josh's text.
Boing 😍: Hey Maya...just wanted to check in with you since we haven't talked since yesterday morning and I just wanna make sure everything's ok.
I take a deep breath in and type:
I think we need to talk. Can I come over after school tomorrow?
I decide to wait until He responds but I get a new text from Riley first.
Riley 💘: I think so. Charlie doesn't know what he's doing. I don't think he's got the guts to do anything to me.
I type:
Wait, why would he do anything? Did he threaten you? If he did I will actually kill him
She responds faster than last time.
Riley 💘: Well I said that he means nothing to me then he told me that I'm gonna regret saying that so...
I feel the familiar burning sensation of rage start to form in my chest.
Well if he tries anything at school he'll end up regretting it deeply. Trust me.
I send that text to her just as Josh responds.
Boing 😍: Sure-is everything ok?
I reply:
I hope so.
After that I turn off my phone and plug it in for the night and get ready for bed.
---------------------------------------------
The next morning when I get to school I notice more people looking at me than usual. As I walk through the hallways they give me unsure glances and turn to whisper to their friends. I know exactly what's going on and the first thought that enters my head is that Riley isn't used to this so she probably has no idea why everyone is acting so strangely.
I run the rest of the way to Her locker and see Her bouncy chocolate curls disappear around the corner towards her first class.
I run down the steps to catch up with her. Once I finally do I tap her on the shoulder and say, "Riley,"
She turns around and I grab her hand and drag her to the nearest girls bathroom. Once the door shuts Riley asks, "What's going on? Are they looking at you too? And whispering?"
"Yes. Sorry Riles that your first rumor has to be at a time like this." I say.
"Rumor? How do you know?" Riley asks nervously.
"They're doing all the steps. First the glances, then the whispering."
"What happens after that?" Riley asks in an even more nervous voice.
"The teasing." I say sadly. "And then the outburst. After that, it's either an adult gets involved, or it just goes away. But it's not as easy as it sounds. Trust me." I add the last part quietly, remembering what my old school was like when I was little after my parents split up, before my mom let me go to school with Riley.
"Oh Peaches, what are we gonna do?" Riley asks.
"We're gonna put a stop to it. But before we do that, we need to find out who started it in the first place." I say. Right after that the warning bell rings. "We'll talk at lunch." I say.
We hurriedly exit the bathroom and go separate ways towards our classrooms. I have English first period with Farkle, so hopefully it won't be that bad.
I take a seat at my desk just as the final bell rings that tells us that we need to be in our classrooms.
The teacher tells us to take a seat then starts talking about the book we are reading and I zone out.
I start to drift off to sleep right as I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around and see a folded up piece of paper being shoved in my face. I scrunch up my nose in annoyance and take it. I'm about to keep passing it up the row but I see that my name is written on the front. I quietly unfold it so the teacher won't hear. On it it says:
I always knew you were weird, but not weird enough to be dating your own best friend. But hey, who doesn't like some lesbian one on one, if you know what I mean?
The fury from last night engulfs me again but I snap out of it when I hear someone say, "Ms. Hart?" I look up and see the teacher looking at me. "Can you tell me the answer?"
"Umm..." I say, looking around. I lock eyes with Farkle who sits text to me on the row to my left. He tips his open book towards me as if he is reading it at a weird angle. In the middle of the left page there is a post-it note that says:
1881
"1881?" I say.
"Correct. 1881 is the year when this novel takes place." She keeps talking but I stop paying attention and exhale slowly. I mouth the word thanks to Farkle and he nods back to me.
I look down at the note one more time and bite my lips, thinking of what I should do with it. I decide to forget about it and stuff it in my bag so whoever wrote it won't see me throwing it away and have the satisfaction of knowing that I read it.
Eventually the end of the period bell rings and I make my way to my next class, acting normal, but my mind is doing anything but that.

It might not be much for some people, but it's more than I ever expected, so thank you all so much! Some of the comments like "I want to know what's gonna happen next" or "please update" are simple but they are what encourages me to keep writing. Thank you❤️
