Riley's POV:
I look around the crowed gym to find who just yelled Maya's name.
Just then, someone marches up to Maya and points at Josh.
"What is he doing here?" Farkle yells.
"Farkle, can we talk for a moment?" Maya asks.
"Fine." Farkle says stubbornly.
They walk off to a corner that was hidden by a curtain, probably because the adults didn't want anyone to be back there.
My hand feels empty without Maya's fingers interlaced with mine, but Lucas quickly takes it and asks if I want to dance. Eager to get my mind off of the weird feelings I've been having lately, I say yes.
We step onto the dance floor and an upbeat song that I've never heard before comes on.
Lucas spins me and we jump to the beat of the song. Once the song is over, I'm gasping for air.
"Hey, why don't I go get us some drinks?" Lucas asks.
"Sure." I say, sitting on a chair by the wall.
I watch him weave through the crowd of people towards the table with refreshments and snacks on them.
I look around, taking in all of the people here.
Yogi and Darby are dancing together, their eyes never looking away from each other. They are so cute together. Why can't I feel like that with Lucas? Oh, right. Because the only person I feel like I can really connect with is Maya.
Just then, I see something white flutter to the ground on my right.
It's a crumpled up piece of paper. I bend down and pick it up, then smooth it out on my lap. It has scribbled writing on it, as if whoever wrote it was in a rush.
This is what it said:
Go to the corner by the bathroom.
I pull my eyebrows together in confusion. I look around for anyone who might've written it, but whoever tossed it near me was gone.
I slowly get up out of the chair, wondering if this is a prank.
I cautiously walk to the door that leads into the hallway and look down the hall to the bathroom. I don't see anyone there, but out of curiosity, I start down the hall.
The closer I get to the bathroom, the more it sounds like someone is whispering.
I stop next to the bathroom and press myself against the wall. I know my mom taught me that it was rude to eaves drop, but I want to know who wrote that note.
I slowly peek my head around the corner into the bathroom, but no one is there.
Then I hear more whispering, this time coming from around the corner of the hall.
Again, I slowly peek my head around the corner, and what I see shocks me so much that I shoot back around the corner and stand in front of the bathroom.
It's Lucas. Lucas and...Missy. They are about ten feet down the hallway.
I risk another look around the corner, and this time, Lucas is leaning towards Missy. Slowly but carefully, he takes her face in his hands and kisses her softly on the lips.
My knees feel week. That was exactly what I did to him on our first date. I can't believe what I saw. Lucas wouldn't do this to me. I know it.
But sure enough, when I look around the corner again, Missy has her arms around Lucas's waste, and his hands are on her back. They are still kissing.
I turn around, not able to look anymore. I take off running down the hallway back to the coat room. My footsteps echo through the hallway, and I hear someone come around the corner.
"Riley?" I hear Lucas's voice say from down the hall.
But I don't turn around. I grab my coat and run to the nearest exit, pushing the door open into the cold night.
