Maya's POV:
I look around the gym for Riley as I sit next to Josh. After Farkle dragged me away from her to yell at me for ditching him as a date, I haven't seen her anywhere.
Josh sees my worried expression and gives my hand a small squeeze.
"It's okay," he says, "she's probably just in the bathroom or something."
"Yeah." I say distractedly.
Josh slouches back in his chair, obviously bored.
"Hey," I say, "is it okay if I go check the bathroom to see if she's in there?"
"Sure." Josh says.
"Come with." I suggest.
We both get up and exit the gym, taking a left towards the girls bathroom at the end of the hall.
"Be right back." I say as I push the door to the bathroom open.
I'm surprised by who I see in front of the mirror when I walk in.
Missy is there applying some lipgloss on her already glossy lips.
"Have you seen Riley?" I ask.
Missy doesn't turn towards me, but a mischievous grin spreads across her face.
"She had to go." She says, setting down her lipgloss.
My heart hammers in my chest. It's really unlike Riley to leave without saying goodbye to me. In fact it's never happened.
"Why?" I ask.
"Oh...let's just say that something happened that she didn't like. And being the selfish little girl she is, she ditched all of her friends just because she was upset."
"Riley's not selfish." I snap.
Missy just smirks at me and turns to the door. She purposely bumps my shoulder as she passes me, making me wobble to the side.
I burst out of the bathroom in fury and speed walk down the hall to catch up to Missy.
I tap her on the shoulder. "Hey, Missy," I say.
She turns around and I take my chance. I lift up my hand and smack her across the cheek, leaving red marks where my fingers made contact on her face.
She cries out and lifts her fingers to her cheek.
"Never insult my friends." I say threateningly.
She turns and runs down the hall back to the gym.
"Maya!" A voice says from behind me.
I turn around and see Josh behind me with an extremely surprised look on his face.
"What was that about?" He asks.
I don't know what to say, so I move my eyes around and look at anything but his face.
"Seriously!" He demands.
"She said something that made me mad. She deserved it." I say.
"What did she say that could possibly make you do that? I've never seen you so mad before in my life!" He says.
"She insulted Riley. Called her selfish. I don't like it when people say rude things about my friends." I explain.
"Maya..." he says.
I look up at him and raise my eyebrows as if to say, "What?"
He lets out a long sigh. "Did you find out where Riley is?" He asks after moment of silence.
"No," I say, "but I have a pretty good idea of where she might be."
"Okay, well I'll ride with you back to your stop but I'm going to stay on the subway because I've gotta get back to where I'm staying tonight." Josh says.
"Where?" I ask.
"My friend's letting me sleep over at his place for the night. Now come on, let's go."
We get our coats and leave the school, leaving stupid Missy behind.
