Violet POV
I woke up in what felt like the middle of the night and turned to my side. I have to admit, this hotel is definitely better then what I would have imagined the old run down motel would be like. The bed is so soft and comfortable, yet I find my night sleepless as this is the third time I have woken.
My thoughts are disrupted when I hear a door close. Instantly I turn on the lamp, at the sound of movement, when I see Conner coming out from the bathroom.
"Oh, its just you." I sighed, throwing my head back against the hedboard of the bed. Conner went over to sit on his bed,
"Who exactly were you expecting it to be?" He said half chuckling
"I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I was really hoping it would be anyone but you. Given the circumstances, it would be nice to see that someone else is still here on earth."
He nodded slightly then let out a loud breath, "So why are you up right now?" He asked,
"Can't sleep, you?"
"Yeah, same. Ever since Friday at the museum my heads been constantly filled and running," He started then laughed, "I have no idea how you smart people do it." He finished making me laugh as well.
"Actually, I feel like my head is empty." I said, shrugging. Conner gave me a confusing look so I continued. "Usually I have things to worry about like homeowork, tests, quizes, books to read, parents to please, and friends. Now its just, stay alive. Which I have been doing pretty well these past 18 years."
Conner sat there emotionless for a second and if it wasnt for the fact that his eyes were open I would think that he had fallen asleep. Then, without explanation asked me for the TV remote. I handed it to him catiously, not know what he was exactly planning on doing with it, but he just simply turned on the TV.
For the most part, it was pretty much the same as always, obviously the commercials were programmed to go off on certian times. It was only when he got up to the news channels did it get weird. The classic Fox tv station was set up just the same, and the cameras were on, but there were no people. The music continued to play and their logo was still on the screen but again, no people. To say the least it was creepy as hell.
"What the fu..." Conner started, quietly. We both just stared at the empty television studio in front of us. "Its almost as if someone is playing some creepy ass game on us." He said turning to me.
I peeled my eyes away from the TV to look at him.
"Okay, so cars work, credit card machines work, electricity works, and even the camera's in the news studio are on but no people? Who is running all of this?" I yelled.
Its not like we had other hotel guests to be aware of.
Frantically I picked up the hotel phone and called 911. It rung for about a minute before I hung up and called 411. Again, nothing.
Getting frustrated, I began punching random numbers into the old style telephone. I just need to talk to someone. Anyone.
Before I could call another number I heard a dial tone ring through my ear and a hand on my shoulder. I turned my head to see Conner standing there, worry written all over his face.
"Vi, don't. Its not gonna work." He said calmly. I smashed the phone down back on the reciever and stood there motionless for a second. All my life I was told to just take a breath, and relax whenever i got too stressed out. This of course was only used when I was studying, not helplessly trapped on a planet with one other person, but it worked just as well nonetheless.
"Violet?" I heard him call me from behind. I turned around and sheepishly smiled,
"Sorry, I just-"
"No, don't apologize, you have every right to be afraid and mad. Who ever is doing this to us sure isn't a nice lad, ill tell ya. Don't apologize though." He said and I smiled to him. He walked over and handed me a tissue. I looked in the mirror and saw that I had in fact let tears fall from my eyes, so I quickly wiped them away.
"We should probably get back to bed now, at least try to get some sleep into us." He spoke and I nodded,
"Could you maybe sleep in my bed with me? I just really don't want to be alone right now..." I asked, slightly embarrased, but I didn't lie, I really didn't want to be alone.
"Of course." He responded with a geniune smile on his face.
Morning came along with a dark gray sky.
"What a beautiful day" I sarcastically groaned as I rolled out from the sheets. Immedietly I smelled eggs cooking out in the kitchen, and juding from the fact that Conner wasn't in the bedroom, Im guessing its him.
As I walked out yawning I saw him plate two eggs along with forks and pepper.
"How did you get eggs?" I asked while sitting down in front of a plate. He sat accross.
"Well good morning to you too. It turns out suites come with eggs, sugar, flour and water bottles, so I figured why not." He said and I shrugged as I took a bite. I know for a fact that the food is probably a way over priced addition to the bill but if there really is someone out there that took everone away he can pay for the damn eggs from his own wallet.
"Plus, you made breakfast yesterday, so I figured I would return the favor." He said and I raised an eyebrow,
"You mean it had nothing to do with the fact that you were hungry and I wasn't up yet to make them for you?" I asked with a smirk and I saw his cheeks flush slightly, showing me that I was right in fact.
"Nope" Was all he said.
It was now well into the afternoon and we just got out from Walmart, getting anything we might need that a hotel can't give us.
"So are we going back to the hotel or do you think we should keep driving south?" I asked him as I slid into the drivers seat.
"Well, what Im thinking is that it can only get warmer the more south we go so, why not?" He responses and I nod, agreeing.
"What do you think we should do next though? I mean, something is obviously happening" I say to him and he just looks at me as if I had a second head,
"Wow, you just noticed something's up? Are you sure you're on the honor roll?"
"I meant, this isn't something that can just...happen. Magic isnt real, things have to happen for a reason, so we have to find the reason, then fix it." I say and he groans,
"And I thought I was done with projects." He says and I laugh,
"Im afriad this one will cost a little more than a test grade also, it might be the difference between us living, or dying from insanity."
"Violet, I don't think we will die." Conner says while laughing,
"I take phyc Conner, if a human being is alone for a long period of time they will go mentally insane from lack of communication."
"Well, I don't think you have noticed, but there is someone here." He starts while pointing to himself. "So just keep communicating to me and we'll be alright."
I groan, "If it means I live, I guess I have to" I say sarcastically and he rolls his eyes while trying to hide his smile.
