Conner POV
Im starting to get really concerned about Violet. I mean, Im always concerned about her, that goes without reasoning, shes the only other person that I have around. But recently she seems to be slipping away. Not in the sense that she isn't interested in me anymore, because if anything our feelings for each other have only grown stronger.
Its just that every morning when she wakes up its almost as if she has forgotten that its just me here. I asked her what she had been seeing in her sleep and all she says is "my parents visited me again". Even late at night sometimes when she is starting to get sleepy, she claims that she hears voices in the room, not always talking to her but sometimes to each other as well.
You would think that even after everything that has happened I would be able to deal with weird events but in reality this is probably more scary because Im completely alone in this. None of these things are happening to me, just her. That's terrifying.
"What in the world is going on in that crazy head of yours" her voice breaks my ever lasting thoughts about her as she sits comfortably snuggled up into my side.
Well at least im guessing its comfortable.
"Nothing really" I glance down at her, "Just you". She smiles up to me sweetly before turning her attention back to the National Geographic channel since it had come back from commercial. I roll my eyes at this. Violet has always constantly been learning things in school. Her brain over time must have gotten hungry or something for learning because now that she isn't learning in a classroom anymore she is finding other methods of finding new information. To be honest I could care less when the best hunting times are for the cheetah, but I don't have the heart to tell her that its completely useless information either.
So If she wants to learn about it. She will.
A few hours later we had sat down on the couch again with some chicken food she decided to make. Im not sure what the right name for it is, all I know is that its food and it tastes good. Good enough for me.
"Hey can you pass the blanket over there?" She asks. I look across the room to the never been used throw blanket that is folded over some foot rest thing. I lift it up to give it to her but I can't help but ask a dumb sounding question
"Why?"
"Because Im cold Conner?" She laughs as she wraps it around herself.
I don't feel any temperature difference from last night.
"God its freezing in here!" she shivers again but puts her attention back to her dinner. I try to ignore the fact that she shouldn't be freezing. Every single day since we were left alone it has been the same temperature every day, then the same slightly cool temp every night. Every single day it was the same.
So why is she colder than usual..
"Hey babe," I start, playing around with my food on my plate
"Mhmm?"
"What did you say happens at night again? when you're sleeping?"
"Well like I said, I see my parents visit me again, and I hear them talk to some guy sometimes, I usually can't hear what they are saying to him, only that they ask a lot of questions based on their expressions." She takes a break for a little bit, like shes collecting her thoughts more, "Its weird though, because they don't feel like dreams. They feel... like a different reality almost? I sound like a crazy women-"
"No," I cut her off, "no you don't. Given the circumstances you are not entitled to call an encounter with your parents crazy." I laugh and she joins in.
"So you haven't...you haven't experienced the same thing?" She asks me and looks down. She knows the answer, and it scares her just as much as it scares me that for once we are not going through the same thing.
"Nope, but maybe its just that your brain is smarter than mine" I shrugged while smirking at her. Her serious expression faded quickly when she saw I was just joking around
"Well then maybe you should watch more tv instead of attempting to braid my hair when Im watching education channels!" Shes laughing now as she speaks
"Oh yeah, gotta love watching polar bears pick their favorite fish of the month. That program had to have won some awards especially!"
"Well its good that you think you're funny" She says but is laughing anyways. Shes joking and she knows it. Im funny as hell. Her laugh is interrupted though by a loud yawn. While her eyes are still screwed shut I stood up and scooped her up in my arms swiftly. At this, her eyes popped open. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Carrying you?" I asked as if it was a casual thing to do
"I can see that, why?" she questioned
"You're tired."
I move into the bedroom of the suite and lay her down on the bed, covering her with another blanket as well considering that shes colder than usual tonight.
"Where are you going?" She asks me as I walk to the door. I turn back to her and kiss her forhead before standing back up.
"Im just gonna go shower, I'll come to bed right after though."
I really don't need a shower. I am the same cleanliness that I had been on the day we took the field trip to the museum, It just makes me feel better to take one.
As I dry myself off I try to keep my thoughts at bay. Since we've been left alone I tend to over think more than I ever have before and it has just led to anxiety and driving myself crazy.
I make my way back into the bedroom and get myself into the blankets when Violet turns around and faces me
"What are you still doing up? I thought you would be sound asleep when I got back." I asked and she just moved up into my chest as I wrapped my arms around her
"Im afraid to sleep..." She whispered. I looked down at her,
"Why?"
"Because if I do then that means that I will be with people again. I will be in the same room as them, and hear their voices. And... and I don't like how its only happening to me." I nod, understanding but pull her back into my chest and kiss the top of her head.
"Everything that is happening is obviously happening for a reason. Whatever the reason might be, you are supposed to be with people when you are asleep. Don't be afraid of it, embrace it okay? And know that I am right here next to you."
I heard her make a noise telling me "Okay". Moments later her breathing patterns deepened and I knew she had fallen asleep.
