• TWO YEARS AGO •

The car wasn't under my mom's control anymore; the worn tires whirred frantically against the icy pavement. Trees that surrounded us only echoed our terror: pure and raw.

I could hear her screams melded into my own, my dad's broken sobs, and my sister's horrified wails. I was waiting for a sound of comfort, hopelessly clinging on to the security that my life had always possessed.

Until now.

The car crumpled against a tree, sending a hollowed ring through my ears. I couldn't see, the tears streaking down my face blearing my vision. All I saw was red.

It soaked through my shirt, sticky like perspiration. It gushed from my mother's head, slumped over onto the steering wheel. It tainted my sister's stomach, her eyes burning with pain.

I heard a low creak, as my father pushed himself out of the wreckage. He pulled open my door, leaning over me with hysteria clouding his eyes. He unbuckled my seatbelt, his mouth moving as if he was trying to say something.

If he was, I couldn't hear him over the ringing monopolizing my hearing. He dragged me from the car, his hands telling me to stay, as he crawled back in, to get my sister. As he brought her to me, my sight cleared enough to see her head dangle unnaturally, her beautiful blonde hair soaked in red. He laid her next to me gently, returning to retrieve my mother, but as he brought her out, I knew she was gone.

Just like my sister, she was gone.
