"Hello class, my name is Mr. Kongora. In this course we will be covering both the foundations needed for mastery in calculus, and the more complex areas of this subject. It is a difficult course, so I expect all of you to pay attention. There will be no foolishness in this class," a balding man in the front of the room announced, assailing our summer-tainted minds with the promise of work.
Summer had begun two months ago, on a hot June day, filling the junior class with freedom and happiness. We had all rushed out, eager to greet summer vacation's welcoming arms. Now, we were plunged back into the dull routine of struggle and resentment.
I glanced around my math class, a small smile threatening to disrupt my hard-set frown, as I saw a familiar mop of brown hair next to me.
"Hey," I grinned, causing a startled Rhys to turn towards me.
"Oh," he replied, his voice tentative, "hey."
Mr. Kangaroo continued to explain the lengthy syllabus (about 20 pages long, single spaced, type 9 font), I let out an elongated groan. If this was what an advanced placement course consisted of, I wanted to revert to pretending I was brainless troublemaker.
Rhys awkwardly chuckled at my impatience, earning a lurid glare from me. He immediately ceased his laughter, concealing it with an artificial cough.
"As I was saying," the teacher sneered, scowling at us both, "I expect no foolishness whilst you are here. The perpetrators responsible for disruption will always be punished, no matter how dire the consequences are."
"Mr.Kangaroo, aren't you being a little dramatic?" I asked, propping a smirk on my face. He huffed angrily at my response, his face turning red, different from his usual shade of pink.
"My name is Kong-oh-rah, not kangaroo," he snapped, shooting a glare at me before continuing, "and, I am not being dramatic. Nara, go to the principal's office."
The class erupted into a chorus of "oohs," causing me to chuckle dryly at Mr.Kangaroo's feeble attempts to intimidate me. Just to earn a little more hatred from the man seeking to terrorize my senior year, I smiled at him, the words coming out without my actual consent.
"Gladly," I replied, as I grabbed my stuff, and walked out the door.
