FIVE
'Son of a bitch.' I muttered, slipping the dagger away and pulling the 9mm sig saucer I had gotten for my birthday out of the waistband of my pants.
'Look, I'll get her back- and more.' The boy's voice took on a harsher edge. 'You'll get your sacrifice, just wait.'
There was another broken howl, and the sound of old, rotting flesh ripping. Would've been the Scarecrow.
'Where?' The possessed kid's eyes flickered to my hiding spot, if only for a second, then back to the hanging dead thing.
I stood up, knowing my element of surprise was gone.
'Hey, don't let me crash your party.' I smiled, waving my hand, still holding the gun. 'I'll just get out of your hair...or whatever you have,' I looked at the Scarecrow as its neck cracked to see me. 'And leave, OK?'
'So you can bring more Hunters here to kill us? Not likely.' The demon laughed, and I cocked the gun, aiming at its chest.
'I don't need more.' Firing two rounds off, I heard the girl scream from wherever she was.
The first one hit the possessed kid in the chest, and blood splattered everywhere, over his face, making him look more satanic. The second one missed. Oops.
'Now look what you've done.' He said, shaking his head like he was scolding a little kid. 'I'll have to find a new meat bag.'
His hand twitched, and I was thrown backwards until I rammed into a tree. Spots exploded in front of my vision, and I felt something warm and wet trickle down my neck. I was suspended at least a foot off the ground, unable to move.
'Sorry, that's not part of the job description.' I ground out.
The Scarecrow howled again, and the demon shook its head. 'No.'
The demon slowly walked towards me, and I still couldn't move.
'Hey, I know you!' It smiled.
'Shame I don't share the enthusiasm.' I muttered.
It narrowed its eyes. 'You're Don Grimm's daughter, ain't you?'
'Who wants to know?'
'You're infamous, you are! Uh...Bellatrix, ain't it?'
'Great, I got the cowboy demon.' I sighed. I was suddenly brought forward and thrown back again- I felt something break, and hissed.
'Wow. Bellatrix Grimm.' It shook its head. 'You really do talk too much, you know that? There's a lotta demons after your ass, sweetheart.'
'Feels nice to be wanted.' I said, and spat blood. No idea where that came from.
'There's a bounty on your head, too.' It studied its fingernails intently. 'Too bad the Crossroads Demon already has dibs- this could've been fun.'
It let me drop, and I landed on my wrist wrong- the snap echoed out through the farm.
'Who the hell are you? What is that thing?' I asked between hisses of breath. And where was that girl? She better not've touched my car...
'Let's just say...I've been following you around quite a bit. I'm friends with the creature that killed your brother's girlfriend.'
'You know what killed Ruby?' I asked.
'Yeah! You see, we demons aren't that different from you humans- we make friends, keep in touch. And while we may not be allowed to get anywhere near your contract, we can kill your friends. So I would suggest saying goodbye to them now, before it's too late.'
'Why are you telling me this?' I snapped. 'And what the hell's that thing?' I jerked my head to the Scarecrow, who was still watching.
'Another friend. And who knows, this information might come in handy.' It smiled again, and I felt sick to my stomach.
'You leave me, and my family, and our friends alone. Don't touch them, or I swear to God I'll hunt down every last one of you sons of bitches.' I spat.
'Someone's a little touchy. I think you should have a rest now.' He smirked patronisingly.
'Don't touch me.'
It brought down a fist, hard, and the world blacked out.
