Sitting on the closed toilet seat and rubbing my hair with a towel, I dialled Johnny's number and waited the two seconds for it to ring.
'Hey Bells, I was just about to call you.' I could hear the smile in his voice. It was a scarred, twisted, slightly frightening smile, but it was a sincere one nonetheless.
'Oh yeah?' I asked. 'How come?'
'I wanted to thank you for sending Dana back. So thanks.'
'What? Dana's...where?'
'Back here with me. Are you and Dex still heading over?' Johnny asked.
'Oh...no...we're on a job.' That wasn't lying as such...we WERE on a job, two in fact. But if Dana was in the RoadHouse not an hour ago, then who was with Johnny?
'I'll let you go then. Thanks again, Bells.' And he hung up.
'What the Hell...?' I muttered.
There was a bang at the door, and I stepped out of the bathroom as Dexter opened the door.
'What are you doing?' I hissed, standing behind him.
'What, now I can't open the door?' He hissed back.
Two cops stood in the doorway, and I immediately scowled.
'Can we help you?' Dexter asked, knowing if I spoke a wide range of profanities and insults would come out.
'We'd like to know if you two know anything about the murder that happened two doors down last night? Especially considering you two checked in at the same time as it happened.' One of the two fat guys asked.
'Oh yeah, 'coz we'd totally kill someone then check into a room two rooms away.' I said sarcastically.
They narrowed their eyes, but I continued. 'Are all the people you catch as dumb as that? Or do they stump you by leaving a donut trail in the opposite direction? Because you know they're just donuts, they're not love.'
'Do you want to go down to the station with us and answer some questions chained to a chair?' The other cop snapped.
'You kinky bastard. Hell, I'm flattered, but I don't swing that way.' I snapped, and Dexter clamped his hand over my mouth.
'Sorry officer.' He apologised for me. 'And sorry, no, we don't know anything.'
They nodded, and turned to go, before one of them turned back and stuck a pudgy finger in my direction. 'You better keep your mouth shut around authority figures from now on if you know what's good for you.'
'Bad cop, no donut for you!' I shouted as Dexter shut the door.
'Wow, you are insubordinate.' He shook his head.
'He was totally asking for it.' I crossed my arms.
'That's beside the point.' He shook his head. 'In any case, we need to check out that murder.'
I quickly went back through the conversation. 'Oh yeah! Let's go!' I said sarcastically. 'Because I just can't wait to check out a murder first thing in the morning.'
I sighed. 'This Medicus dude is seriously starting to get on my nerves.'
'Wonder what would make you say that?' Dexter said sarcastically, crouching next to the dead bodies. Somehow he had convinced the cops to let us in for an hour or so- we were special investigators or something?
It was a man and woman, both with vital internal organs cut out. I have to give The Medicus credit- he sure was getting better at mutilating people.
There was also another note, once again carved into the wall and painted over with blood;
We're closing in on you.
You won't be saved.
-The Medicus.
'It's more than one.' I said absent-mindedly.
'I think these people were alive...for awhile after their harvesting, at least. You don't think it kept them awake and alive while it cut them open?' Dexter asked, looking up at me.
I shrugged. 'Could be. But I think we need to get out of here. Johnny said that Dana was with him.'
'She's at the RoadHouse.' Dexter stood. 'That's what mum said.'
'I know.' I growled. 'I just wish- never mind. Come on, let's go.'
