Forty-Five:
'That's definitely...ominous.' I muttered to myself. 'Well at least you tried. Gloria, you're a psycho bitch, but you're our psycho bitch apparently, and I hope you accept my poor excuse at an apology.'
'You're not going to die!' Dexter yelled at me angrily. 'I won't let you.'
'You don't get much choice in the matter.' We all turned as one, creepily awesome as that was, to see Dana standing behind us.
She was wearing a long, flowing back dress the skimmed over the dust.
'You made the deal with Dana?' Dexter asked incredulously.
'No.' Gloria and I said simultaneously.
'She just holds the contracts.' Gloria narrowed her black eyes.
'That's why you kept moving off so fast.' I said slowly. Standing in the centre seemed to make the poison flow faster; my head spun and my veins throbbed.
'Trix, what the Hell happened to you?' Dexter cried as he caught sight of the sickly yellow trails spreading up my throat.
I swallowed hard. 'You found the sulphur in my blood- it's just starting to spread.'
I didn't know how I looked, nor was I sure I really wanted to- I probably looked like death warmed up five days ago.
Just as Gloria was about to say something, both her and Dexter dropped, unconscious- I fell to my knees beside him, making sure he was OK.
'What did you do?' I snapped.
'They're fine.' Dana smiled sweetly as her eyes went yellow.
'You gotta stop doing that. Dexter's going to start losing brain cells he doesn't have.'
'Are you going to miss your brother, Bellatrix?' Dana asked, walking slowly towards me. 'Because you know it, and even he knows it deep down- you can't be saved.'
I clenched my jaw. 'I want to change my deal.'
'Oh, it's a bit late for that sweetheart.' She shook her head sadly, standing in front of me.
'I don't want to live any longer, I just want you to do one more thing. When I die- at least he stays protected. That's all I care about. Please.' Even though it burned to say it, I knew I had to.
I could die happy knowing Dexter would always be OK.
Dana mulled it over. 'Sorry kiddo. No can do.'
'Why not?' I practically yelled. 'I only did this for him really! I can't stand knowing he could be in danger. Dana, you used to be one of us- you know what it's like for me.'
'USED to be one of you?' She pretended to be hurt. 'Am I not part of your family anymore?'
'You're a demon about to bring Hell Hounds up to drag me into Hell.' I said as if she were dumb. 'No, you're not. No Christmas card for you.'
'What a shame.' She sighed, blinked, and her eyes went brown again.
'What about Johnny?' I asked suddenly. 'Does he know you're doing this to people? To me?'
She bit her lip. 'He doesn't NEED to know anything.'
'Take me now, if you like, but please- let him be OK.'
'Bellatrix, I don't think you understand-'
'Dana, please!' I yelled. 'I'll do anything! I'm already dying! Doesn't that mean anything?'
She sighed, as if berating herself. 'Can't believe I'm doing this.'
'You mean it?' I asked, happy for the first time in years.
'You're going down to the Pits, Bellatrix- and you're never coming up.'
'Will he be safe?'
'Yes.'
There was a flash of lightening, and I saw Dexter and Gloria wake, before the earth cracked and massive monsters dragged themselves out- the size of a two story building, their fur as hard and sharp as razor blades.
Their claws were long and curving, cutting into the gravel just by standing there, and as they flexed, it seemed to cut the air. They revealed teeth, jagged and long and made for massacring.
I swallowed hard.
