'Wow, this is just...wow.' I moaned over a bite of pie.
'If you and that pie want to get a room, just let me know.' Dexter laughed slightly as I took another bite.
'He's just jealous.' I whispered to the pie, loud enough for him to hear.
'Oh yeah totally.'
'Listen Dex,' I put the pie down. 'I know I've never been the best at...being there for you.'
He gave me a weird look. 'Where're you going with this?'
'I just wanted to say that...' I looked out the restraunt window. 'You know, I tried, I failed, and I'm sorry.'
'And this is coming from...?' He waved his hand expectantly.
I clenched my jaw, only for a second, and narrowed my eyes. 'You're not making this easy, you know.'
'OK, OK.' He laughed, holding up his hands. 'Sorry. Continue.'
'Oh no, I'm done.' I laughed. 'I'm not opening up to you ever again.'
'And you honestly call that opening up?' Dexter asked incredulously.
'Yes.'
He shook his head. 'Anyway, I did some research on that mutilation we found earlier today. Now I didn't see much, but from what I did see, know and researched, it seems like that Medicus dude is like a modern-day Jack the Ripper- with some surgical knowledge, so he would've cut out some organs, like the woman's kidneys, liver and uterus.'
I pushed the food out of my mouth with my tongue, feeling sick. 'Come on, man, I'm eating.'
'Don't tell me the great Hunter is getting squeamish?' He laughed slightly.
'The great Hunter WAS eating until you grossed her out. Ugh, seriously, I think I'm done.' I dropped what was left of my pie. It was a good pie too. But after a second I picked it back up and shrugged. 'Hell, I can't stay mad at you.'
'We'd better go anyway. We don't really need to stay here any longer, do we?'
I shrugged, and stood. 'Guess not.'
As I followed him out, my mobile buzzed silently in my back pocket- after checking the ID, I quickly answered, 'Hey Johnny, we- what? When?'
'What?' Dexter mouthed as my face fell.
'OK.' I said softly. 'We'll be down there as soon as we can.' I hung up and put my phone back.
'What?' Dexter repeated angrily. 'What happened?'
'Dana's gone.' I said softly. 'He doesn't know why, but this morning Dana was gone, and there was sulphur over all the windows.'
'Demons?' He asked quietly, and I clenched my jaw as we kept walking.
'I dunno. But I know Gloria's behind it somehow, the little bitch.'
The few streetlights that there were shone down in flashes, highlighting the front of the dark car every so often down this dark dirt road. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes with the heel of one of my hands, I looked over at Dexter, sleeping with his head hanging over the back of the chair, mouth wide open. When he slept, he actually looked normal- like he didn't know and had to deal with everything that went on in my world.
Turning back, I yawned loudly and stared out at the road, highlighted only by my headlights and the occasional streetlight.
I blinked dumbly, and either had a lapse in time or had fallen asleep suddenly, because suddenly we were coming up to a crossroads.
'Damn I hate those things.' I muttered tiredly.
I blinked again, and suddenly there was a figure standing in the middle, about it get hit- I yelled and swerved insanely, skidding to a stop and kicking up a mountain of dust. Dexter cried beside me, 'What the Hell Trixie?'
'I almost hit someone!' I gasped, unable to let go of the steering wheel.
He winded down his window and stuck his head out. 'That would make total sense, if there were someone out there.'
Opening the door, I stepped out and looked around. There wasn't anyone there, and nowhere for anyone to hide- must've been my imagination.
'Oh, uh...must've imagined it.' I muttered, rubbing my face.
'Doesn't help that you've been driving for six hours straight.' Dexter pointed out.
'Yeah.' I muttered.
There was no way that was coincidence. And the fact that I saw some creepy figure at a Crossroads...nothing is a coincidence. It never happened.
I learned that the hard way.
