Chapter Twenty-Eight

Ten minutes later, I was covered in various types of weaponry, had drawn eight different types of symbols on myself and was ready to go inside.

The sun was close to setting, and as I stood in front of the broken chains that hung on the door, I once again counted my options.

I was going to die anyway- why not do it fighting to save the people I loved?

September 2000

As soon as I heard Dexter open the front door of the RoadHouse, I abandoned the game of poker I was playing with the other Hunters and ran out to meet him.

'Dexter!' I cried, enveloping him in a hug. 'Are you OK? Did anything weird happen? Are you hurt? Did anyone-'

Laughing, he pushed me off him. 'Trixie, I'm fine.'

Then I noticed the flecks of blood on his shirt, and clenched my jaw. 'What happened?' I asked, deadly quiet.

'Oh, uh...nothing, I...'

'What happened?!' I snapped loudly, and the other Hunters looked over at us.

'I tripped.' He shrugged.

'Were you pushed? Was it-'

'Trixie, I'm fine.' He laughed again. 'I just fell. You don't need to freak out about me all the time.'

Behind us, I heard one of the guys mutter, 'I've never seen that sort of commitment before. That kid should enjoy it while it lasts.'

I clenched my jaw, upset, and Dexter immediately caught it.

'Trix, it's just a few hours each day. It's not like I'm never coming back.'

'You'd be surprised.' I snapped and turned and walked off. Walking past the poker game, one of them called, 'Since you're not playing anymore, can I check your hand? I'm doing it anyway.'

I didn't care. I just wanted to shoot something.

September 2013

'This is not how I would picture my birthday.' I muttered to myself. Not that it was my birthday- according to my Motorola, it was still three days away. But walking through the many scary, darkened halls of this probably haunted criminally insane with no idea where the two men were seemed like a plausible thing that I'd still be doing on my birthday.

Ah, the glamorous life of a Hunter.

I shone torch lights up around all the walls, glancing quickly in each room if it was open. I held a salt gun in the other hand- it seemed the safest weapon in my present situation.

I heard scuffling, and a muffled voice- 'Dexter?' I called loudly. 'Dad?'

Then I heard the sobbing too, and I knew it wasn't them.

'Hello?' I called, feeling chills go up my spine as my voice echoed around, awaking anything that could be living here. 'Who's there? I'm not going to hurt you...providing you don't hurt me.' I whispered the last bit.

I saw a flash of movement, someone hiding behind an overturned table. Walking over silently, I leaned over and reached my hand out. Feeling my presence, the girl whirled around and recoiling, sobbing loudly now.

'Please don't hurt me!' She screamed, trying to push herself further away from me but stuck against the wall.

'I'm not going to.' I held up my hands and crouched down by her side. 'My name's Bellatrix, and I'm trying to find my brother. Who are you?'

'My...my name's Scarlett.' She stammered. She was short, but then again I'm tall, with really short red hair and brown eyes. 'I-I came here with some friends, to do the dare you know.'

'No, I don't.'

'Well...if you're here on September eleventh then all the demented spirits come out to talk to you.' She stammered.

Oh, I felt so special.

'Is that so?' I clenched my jaw. 'Uh...aren't you a little early?'

'Curtis-'

'Who?'

'My boyfriend.'

'Ahh.'

'He wanted to come earlier, just to prove how much he wasn't scared. But we saw someone...or something...' She started sobbing loudly again. 'We spilt up, and now I don't know where they are.'

'It's OK. Come with me, we'll find my brother and we'll get out of here, perfectly fine. I promise.'

Just as she began to calm, she looked up to where the light shone on the roof and let out an ear-splitting scream.

I looked up, seeing the mangled, grotesquely disfigured zombie crawling on the ceiling.

Shooting it straight in the face it dispersed into essence, but that wouldn't stop it for long.

'Come on.' I grabbed Scarlett's arm and dragged her forward and up, running away from the apparition.

The sooner we were ALL out of this place, the better.
