Thirty-Eight:

When I opened my eyes the sun was beginning to rise- cracking the tendons in my neck and clearing my throat, I waited for my vision to clear.

'Dexter?' I called. He suddenly appeared in front of me, and I jumped.

'Don't do that!' I scolded.

'I thought you weren't gonna wake up for real this time.' He sighed in relief and sat in front of me. 'How are you feeling?'

'Are you getting dumber?' I asked, just as serious. 'Because I think you are. Where's the psycho bitch?'

'She's not as bad as you think, Trix.' Dexter said.

'She's a demon. And no matter who it is, or what it is, the same rule applies.

What the Hell could've possibly possessed you to trust her?' I asked.

He shrugged. 'I've known her for most of my life.'

'Oh yeah, I remember now, because you used to invite her in when I was gone.' I clenched my jaw. 'Didn't I teach you anything? Didn't Dad?'

'Don't get all pious with me, Trixie.' He snapped, but wasn't really trying. 'Not all demons are bad.'

'No, some are good like unicorns, who run on moonbeams and shoot rainbows out of their asses.'

'Now unicorns aren't real?' He pretended to be hurt.

'As real as Santa Claus.'

'Yeah, I know. You were the one to tell me that.' He said dryly.

'See, I never once lied to you.' I pointed out. 'Now that we've established that, you can untie me.'

'I dunno...'

'Dex, I'm your sister. What am I going to do?'

He shot me a look.

'What? Come on...I'm not going to do anything to YOU.' I tried to smile but it hurt my skin.

As he started untying my wrists and ankles, I caught the barest flash of green and yellow spreading faster through my veins, fast as blood.

That couldn't be good.

'Thanks.' I said, standing and rubbing my wrists. 'And Dex, I just wanted to say,' I brought back my fist and hit him hard.

He fell back, unconscious. 'Now we're even.' I said, stepping over him and walking out.

I fell back in the motel bed with a massive sigh. I had been driving for eight hours straight- and with whatever the Hell was going on with my metabolism and immune system, I was about to pass out.

Someone knocked on the door loudly, and sighing, I got up and stumbled to the door, not bothering to move the dagger I had placed on the table out of sight.

'What?' I groaned, opening the door slightly.

'Hey Trix.' Dexter smiled wickedly, and I took a step back.

'Look man, no hard feelings right?' I laughed nervously. I had never seen that look on his face before, and it was freaky.

'No, not at all.' He said. 'I probably would've done the same thing.'

'Like Hell you would've.' I snapped before I could stop myself. 'Sorry. I-'

He shrugged, cutting across me. 'I know. Getting close to your day, you start tripping out a bit. Johnny told me.'

I rubbed my face tiredly. 'Yeah, sorry.'

'And that poison's gotta be spreading through you pretty fast.'

I looked up. 'What?'

Dexter's eyes went crimson red, and I flew against the wall, hearing it crack underneath me. At least, I think it was the wall.

I hope it was the wall.

Dexter appeared in front of me as I hung about a foot off the ground, red eyes regarding me carefully as he cocked his head to the side.

I swallowed hard as my sleeves rolled up my arms, revealing my underarm and the sickly green spreading just below the skin. The scar on my right forearm stood white against the pink, shining against the fluorescent light.

The look Dexter gave me when he saw the scar and poison was...creepy at best.

'W-what's that look for?' I stammered.

He looked up at me and smiled again.

'You should know it by now. I got it from you.'

'What? I never-'

'Before you kill ANYTHING, you give it that look- like you're going to enjoy its death.'

I swallowed again.

Dexter raised a hand, and I saw the wickedly curved, serrated sickle he was holding.

'W-what are you going to do with that?'

Smiling again, he brought it down hard.

I shot forward, gasping and covered in a cold sweat. After a second of making sure I was really alone, I fell back, still breathing hard.

'That was some weird-assed dream.' I whispered to myself.

But it seemed so REAL.
