Chapter Twenty-Six
Bounding down the flights of stairs and crashing into the cafe I was suddenly plunged into the midst of the chaos- people screamed and some even tried to help Dexter, who was struggling without avail against a couple of creatures, but neither of us could do much- I couldn't get over there fast enough, and neither of us could draw weaponry.
So while I was being shoved backwards with people yelling in my ear, I watched in horror as Dexter was dragged away- and the whole in my chest got so much bigger.
September 2000
'He's a bit late to start, isn't he?' I asked darkly, sticking my hands deep in my hoodie pockets but pulling the hood far over my face. 'Can't we just home school him?'
'You got to go to school- why can't he?' Dad asked as we waited by the gate, waiting for Dexter to get out of the car. 'He's just starting from sixth grade when you got to start from third.'
'Oh yeah, and look how well that turned out.' I muttered cynically. 'On my third week my teacher turned into a Shifter and I got my first fight when I was six.'
'You did start a bit early.' Dad admitted, laughing slightly to himself.
'I really don't think he should start school at all.' I insisted. 'I can teach him.'
'Why don't you want him to go to school? Interact with people his own age- be normal?' He asked.
Because then I can't keep my eye on him and protect him. Of course, I didn't say that. Because I was more responsible than most 14-year-olds, I kept opinions likely to get me into unwanted fights to myself.
'Because we're not normal.' I said instead.
Dad put his hand on my shoulder. 'He'll be just fine without you for six hours.'
I looked up at him. 'Do you promise?'
'Yes.'
As Dexter finally got out and Dad walked him in, I felt a hole open up in my chest.
But it was only small, and it'd go away eventually- wouldn't it?
