"I'm gonna go sit on the bathroom floor for a while." Calum suddenly says in the middle of our conversation. No, don't leave me here with just Luke.
"Hey, uh... I might come too." Luke also just gets up and leaves. Um, what? Did I miss something? I lean over and watch them go towards the bathroom. Ashton and Michael are in that area now anyway. This is so weird. I'm confused, but then someone clears their throat.
"Um, hey Dakota?" I look up and find Tess standing awkwardly in the doorway with a white paper bag in her hands. The bus door closes and after a few seconds, Earl starts up the engine and we're moving again.
"Yeah?" I ask quietly.
"Can I talk to you?" God how did it get this awkward?
"Uh, sure. You can sit if you want." I gesture to the seat across the small table from me and she does as I suggest.
"Okay, just bare with me." She takes a deep breath, then opens the paper bag and messily pulls out two pieces of her favourite cheesecake. "See these two pieces?"
"Well yeah, they're right ther--"
"Cody, please just nod. I just want to get this out, then you can say whatever you want, okay?" She cuts me off, slightly frustrated.
"Okay." I say. She raises an eyebrow at me as if to ask 'what did I just say?' and so I nod instead.
"Good. So these two pieces looks pretty much the same, yeah?" She asks. I nod again. "That's like us. Twins. Now, can you see how this one has a few bits missing and it's corner's fucked up?" I nod. "That's me; I have things wrong with me and I'm still working out my imperfections." She takes a deep breath and I nod again to show that I'm still listening. "I... You're one of the only people that can help me with this." I nod again, but she doesn't continue.
"So..." I trail off and she sighs with a tiny smile.
"Cody, this is me offering you my surrender. I can't fight with you any longer." She says, then grins properly. "Besides, I know how much you love this stuff." We both laugh. "So what do you say? Together forever?"
"I thought you'd never ask." I sigh happily. "Together forever." I get up as so does she and we just hug it out. It feels so good to know that she doesn't hate me and that she probably never really did in the first place; she was mad, and that's perfectly okay since we're only human.
"I missed you." She says quietly, leaning her head on my shoulder.
"I missed you too."
For the next few hours, we eat, catch up on the events of our daily lives, talk about my boy issues, celebrate her lack of memory relapses lately, discuss our plans for meeting up with Tony and Mel, and talk about what we're going to do between now and California.
In the end we run out of things to catch up on so for a while, we just sit in silence, enjoying each other's company for a long while.
It's good to have my other half back.
