Chapter 3

━━━━━━━━━

I sighed as we stopped to take a break. We had been walking for hours now. But we would need to keep going if we wanted to make it there by Friday. I had to get to Mr. Davenport in time. If I didn't, my whole family would turn on me. Chase already ran away, but if Adam and Leo found out I was the sole air to helping save Mr. Davenport, they would practically disown me. I couldn't lose them, too. I needed someone in my corner.

Chip leaned down and sat quietly on one of the boulders along the path. He leaned back and laid on the large rock as he glanced up to the sky. He seemed to be able to tell what time it was just by looking up at the sky. I knew he had been out here too long. What time did he leave home? And why? He still refuses to tell me. Twenty questions was a bust. We were only able to make it to... Question six for each of us before the silence of the wilderness and the sounds of our breathing overtook the space between us.

The sky was a light blue and orange as the sun slowly set on the edge of the skyline. I never really planned on camping out, ever. But I guess there's a first for everything.

"Chip." I whispered as I took a seat next to him on the rock. He took in a calm breath before turning to me, keeping his hands laid out beneath his head to pad against the rock like a pillow. He smiled.

"Yeah?" He whispered. We had agreed to speak quietly, and as little as possible, since the night would be overtaking the woods soon enough. He even seemed slightly scared to spend the night in here. From the stories he had told before, it sounded like I was slowing him down. But it's not exactly my fault, I'm usually the fastest person around. I've never traveled this far without bionics, thanks to Douglas.

"Are we stopping for the night?" I whispered back. He looked exhausted to say the least. Not that I wasn't. I was probably more out of it between the two of us, anyhow.

"In a bit. I want to get to the lake before we stop. We can start a fire and eat when we get there. It'll be safe." He replied surely as he sat up slowly. He let his hands fly out behind him as a rest from his tired body. I sat closely to him as I heard a crack of branches out behind us.

"It's okay." He whispered as he let his left arm rest around my shoulders. I took in a shaky breath as I glanced from side to side, trying to get a good enough bearing on the whereabouts of the sound. Chip smiled slightly as he pulled me closer.

"You want to head out?" He whispered before I nodded happily. I didn't want to stay here long enough to find out what the noise was.

"Yes please." I mumbled as he helped me up. He held each of my hands as he pulled me to my feet before we were face to face yet again. He smiled slightly as his hands found their way to my hips.

"Ready?" He whispered. I nodded, feeling my cheeks burning slightly. He smiled as he took a closer look at me, much to my discontent. I didn't exactly want him seeing how nervous I got around him.

"Yep." I mumbled as he pulled me forward. He dropped my hand as he walked ahead a few feet, leading the way for me. He walked calmly, knowing the exact way to go without a second thought. I missed that. I missed my speed. I missed home for that matter. I knew where everything was. I was able to trail down the roads, no problem. But out here, I was completely clueless. Relying on someone I just met earlier this afternoon for guidance.

"How long until its completely dark?" I whispered as he stopped at a line of bushes and shrubs. He threw his head back as he glanced around for the sun. As his eyes finally caught sight of the sliver of light, he nodded to himself before responding.

"About ten minutes. We'll be to the lake in about five. Don't worry." He reassured before pushing through a bush. He walked through to the other side before holding it back for me. I mumbled a thank you before walking easily through. He left the bush to its original position before speed walking to catch up to me. He took one step ahead, still wanting to be the leader of sorts. I rolled my eyes. He must have been used to being in control before this whole, "out on my own thing". What was up with him anyway? He was acting like I was completely defenseless. When I was actually far from that fact. I was once the most powerful girl in the world given the fact of my bionics and my training with Mr. Davenport. I could kick some serious ass when I felt like it.

"I'm not worried, you know. I've been in way worse situations. You can quit acting like I'm scared." I whispered, slightly louder than I had been for the past couple of hours. He took in a deep breath and turned slightly.

"I can tell you've been in worse situations. But, you need to get home quickly. So I suggest you trust me, okay? I've been up and down here everyday since I turned fifteen. Whereas you, haven't. As far as I can tell the only thing you know like the back of your hand is the latest issue of people magazine." He hissed suddenly. I frowned in anger before I shoved past him, not wanting to deal with this. I was bionic for gods sake. I knew the world like the back of my hand. I was able to travel anywhere, anytime. While this loser had had enough time to walk this stupidly put together trail over and over again. Let alone put the whole thing together. Get a life, much?

"For the record. I have absolutely no idea what's in the latest issue of people. Or the one before that, for that matter." I snapped, my voice still raising as I stomped along. I had two brothers, three technically. I didn't have time for petty the drama happening in hollywood. He huffed before racing up to me and catching my arm.

"Will you be quiet for five seconds?" He whispered harshly. I rolled my eyes and shook my arm out of his grasp.

"No, I won't-"

"Well you need to. You may not want to listen to me at all right now, but listening to me, is what's going to keep you alive." He interrupted before he took my hand in his forcefully, practically dragging me along with him. I stumbled along as he glided along the path, leaving me almost tripping as he raced quickly.

"Can we slow down?" I asked after about a minute of this. He nodded and threw my hand from his.

"Whatever works for you, princess." He scoffed before taking slow steps forward. My heart stopped at the name I had heard so many times on the way up here. That was Douglas' pet name for me, simply because I was the only girl of the three bionics. I was no princess. I worked for everything I got.

"Don't, call me princess." I stated as I slapped his shoulder. I could hear him laugh quietly as he pushed on, shoving a tree branch out of the way only for himself before letting it hit me on the face.

"Uh." I grunted as I ducked under the branch. He smirked as he turned to face me.

"I'm sorry, I should have held that for you, princess." He teased. I shook my head and held my arms over my chest as I walked a few steps forward. He stopped as we came to the edge of the lake we had been traveling to the entire day. I smiled at the sight. I had never actually seen a lake before. They weren't exactly plentiful back in Mission Creek. Creeks however, were everywhere. He took in a breath before he lead me over to a spot about twenty feet from where we had come in. There were logs set up, just like your typical camping site. In the center was a ring of rocks, waiting for a fire to be set up. Begging for something in need of cooking. I glanced around to see the sun was indeed setting like Chip had said it would. Ten minutes on the dot.

"You sleep here. I'm going to get us food for the morning. Sweet dreams, princess." He said snidely before walking around to the other end of the lake. Because of the darkness setting on us, I could no longer see him for the life of me. I rolled my eyes and laid down carefully, leaning my head against one of the two logs. I felt my eyes drift shut, seeing as I could no longer make out any other forms but the stars in the sky.

"He called me princess." I mumbled angrily before sleep overtook my tired body.
