Chapter 8
━━━━━━━━━
My eyes fluttered open slowly the next morning to the sound of something crashing down beside me. My face was covered in tears. I closed my eyes once more as I wiped the evidence from my face. Chip couldn't know I had cried myself to sleep. He would instantly think it was because of him. When in all reality, it had been because of my brother. My brother who just so happened to be long gone.
I opened my eyes again to see it had been Chip who had made the sound. He was cleaning the fire from last night, placing the wood off to the side as he reset the small stones that lined the supposed fire pit. I smiled slightly as he glanced up to me. His eyes caching mine for only a minute. He shook his head before he brushed his hands off and standing up straight.
"You're up." Chip hissed as he let his hands fall into his front pockets. I nodded as I sat up.
"Yeah." I mumbled. I sighed as I glanced down to my leg, seeing the gauze was covered in blood once again.
"Why don't we change that before we leave. It'll get infected, otherwise." Chip replied before picking up the first aid kit and seating himself about two feet from me. He reached out and pulled the gauze back carefully. He motioned for me to sit my leg up straight as he pulled away at the bandage. I nodded and looked away as he began to pull it down lower. I didn't want to see it. It would freak me out, and I couldn't have that. The feeling of the gauze moving stopped suddenly, forcing me to look.
"How?" Chip asked before running his hand over my now perfectly healed leg. I felt myself frown as I to let my hand fall to my leg. It was completely destroyed last night. How had it healed so fast?
"What was on the gauze?" I asked, forgetting for the moment that we were fighting. He shrugged as he focused his attention away from me. He pulled the rest of the gauze off before throwing it into a plastic bag and chucking the supplies back into the log for later.
"Just the usual. We shouldn't worry about that. We only have about two and a half days to get you home. Why don't you follow me. I think I should walk ahead and check for a few things. Just in case." Chip suggested as I stood up, wobbling slightly as I adjusted to my newfound energy. I still couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that my leg was healed completely. Chip nodded to himself before racing off to the path. I sighed as I raced after him. I couldn't keep up with how things had gone yesterday. We couldn't keep this going. If telling him what happened is what would win me at least one last conversation, I might be up for it.
"Chip!" I called as I raced after him. He laughed as he continued on, only about twenty feet ahead of me. I rolled my eyes as he kept going. He considered this a game, didn't he? He thought it was completely hilarious that I couldn't keep up with him. He loved it actually. He must enjoy watching me struggle.
"Chip!" I hissed as the fatigue began to set back to me once more. I couldn't keep going. I was still exhausted from the chase he had put me through yesterday. He did remember that he had ran after me for almost half an hour. Not to mention the fact that he almost made me bleed to death. No, he probably didn't.
I stopped to catch my breath as I felt the sweat begin to fall down my face, instantly taking over the trail my tears had taken just hours before. It was silly really to keep reminding myself of that. But I felt bad every waking moment for it. I did know it was my fault Chase left. I just never had the courage to tell everyone about it.
