Chapter 12

━━━━━━━━━

Chase's POV

My eyes shot open as my hand flew to my neck. My chip was buzzing. It always gave me a weird sensation that could only be described as a tingling. Software update?

I frowned as I sat up. I haven't gotten a "software update" since the week I left. Mr. Davenport used it to send messages to me at first, before he figured out I was never coming back. I always regretted leaving in a way, but it was for the best. I was bringing more trouble onto Bree and the rest of the family by staying there. None of them would have understood. Bree even had trouble understanding up until a few hours ago.

I brought up the message on my chip to see it was a video. Mr. Davenport always liked holograms better...

I rolled my eyes as I realized there could only be one person sending this to me. Bree. She must have forgotten something. Either that, or she had something more to say to me. I let the image stay in my sights as I contemplated wether or not to read it. It may just hurt the both of us if I opened it. But, there was also the voice in the back of my mind that yelled she had to have been broken up about something if she took the time to send this, let alone make it. Bree had never been good with technology. She always came to me when she had a problem. Now that I think about it though, that may have been a way to spend more time together.

I shook away the thought. Bree left. I practically told her that there was no hope for the two of us, no matter what. In all reality, I am smart enough to figure out a way for the two of us to live a happily ever after, just as she wished. But I couldn't deny the fact that we were brother and sister. I knew I had broken her heart by saying that, but she did the same to me two years ago. She needed to say it back then, and I needed to say it now. There isn't a way to get over that.

I nodded to myself as I clicked on the video, deciding to watch it against all restrictions I had against myself of never seeing her again.

I watched as she closed her eyes slightly, almost looking nervous. I leaned up, as if it would bring me closer to her. She looked like she had been crying all night. She looked as though she was about to start crying right now. Because of me.

"Chase. This is for you." Bree began. I smiled at the sound of her voice. I would never want to get rid of this video. It would probably be the only thing that got me to sleep at night from now on. I was always worried about her. But now I knew she would eventually be okay.

"I know you can't interrupt me now, since I'm recording this myself, but I want you to listen. I want you to save this just in case. This may be the last you hear from me, ever." I nodded as she went on, forgetting for the moment that she couldn't see my reaction.

"I want you to watch this all the way through. I never got to tell you some things before. But, I have a chance now, so..." She left off. I laughed lightly, knowing she had no idea where this was going. She seemed as though she had so much to say to me, but so little at the same time.

"I don't know what to say, which is both bad, and good. I guess I'll start by telling you... how I got you out of that trance on Tuesday. You were going to kill me, but I got your attention somehow. I could tell you were still there, so I did the only thing that I could think of. I kissed you." My heart stopped as I paused it. I let myself fall back against the log as I let that sentence replay in my head. She kissed me. She kissed me to bring me out of the trident app. I knew she had done something drastic. I never expected this, though. Douglas could use my eyes as his own when he used the trident app. Now he knew of Bree and I. I shook my head and clicked play again.
