Chapter 18
━━━━━━━━━
"Hey." I breathed as I reached for his hand. He smiled as he took a deep breath, letting me hold into his right hand since he had been shot in the left arm. He smiled over to me, looking still drowsy from the medication they must have given him for the operation. He glanced at my outfit with a sly smile. I could tell he had something to say.
"You changed." Chase teased. I nodded as I looked him up and down. They had ripped off the top of his mission suit, but left the bottoms on. The ends had a ripped look to them, looking uneven in every direction. Chase smirked as he squeezed my hand tighter. I laughed slightly as Chase glanced over to the trash can at the side of the room, silently telling me that's where the other half of his suit ended up.
"I'm sure Davenport told you about the mission suit." Chase added, hinting at Davenport's large enough ego in which that was more important than Chase getting shot. I smiled and nodded, remembering the conversation I had had with Davenport. He had seemed pretty upset about the mission suit. Adam was right about his secret love of sewing.
"He did. But he never told me how long you were in surgery. Or how you were doing." I prodded as I held his hand tighter. The thought of Chase's arm hurt just reassured my decision to kill Marcus. I still had to tell him about that as well. Chase nodded slowly, looking slightly reluctant to tell me so simply because of how worried I had been about him already.
"The surgery took about an hour from what I can tell, no one told me specifically. But, going off of your other question, I'm better, now that you're here. I was worried you might have left to go kill Marcus or something." Chase finished with a small laugh. I froze as he said that. He was kidding, but I was serious when I got the idea. I wanted to make sure that Marcus would never be a problem to us again, and that was the only way that I knew for sure that he never would. People can promise all they want. They can tell you a thousand times that they've changed. That what you know will happen, will never happen. But some people, can't be trusted. And it's people like Marcus and Douglas that fit the bill.
"Would you have done that if he had shot me? Would you have killed Marcus?" I asked, trying to lead onto what I had done. I still had to explain this fact to three other people. It was hard enough going through it without actually having to retell the story. I wanted to know also that he would have felt as crazed as i had in that moment. Just the thought that the person who could have killed Chase was about to run free, flocked on a button inside of me. Chase shrugged.
"Probably, why?" Chase asked warily, almost catching onto what I was getting at. He and Davenport were the same in that sense. They could both tell when I was lying, or when I was being painfully obvious. Much like now. I took in a deep breath as I let my eyes close.
"Bree?" Chase asked as his right hand flew to cover mine. I didn't want to tell him, but I knew I had to. The sooner the better. Might as well tell him know, especially before Davenport tells him.
"I killed him. I killed Marcus." I bit out, waiting for Chase to give me a look that told me he was ashamed of what I had done. I looked back to him to see the worry was still evident.
"Well then I guess I should be asking if you're okay." Chase whispered as he let his fingers slide over my hand. I shook my head. He was the one to be worried about, not me. I should be the one locked up in a cop car right about now. No matter what those two have done.
