You glance nervously at the watch on your wrist. Only 3 more minutes, you think to yourself. You’re sitting in your car, waiting for exactly the right time to walk into your new job. You’d recently been hired to work with the CCPD as a new forensic scientist. You knew that you’d be working with another person, but nobody gave you any information about him or her.

Being the nervous, shy, and slightly awkward person that you were, you managed to try and leave enough time in case anything went wrong, but ended up with 20 minutes of sitting in your car. You look at your watch again and take the final sips of your coffee as you leave your car, fixing your outfit before walking towards the building.

You stopped at the first desk you saw, thankful it was someone who could tell you where your division was.

“Hi, I’m Y/N Y/L/N. It’s my first day, could you tell me how I can get to forensic sciences?”

“One second, miss” she said, picking up the phone that was ringing and putting them on hold. “Now, to get there you’ll need to- oh wait! Barry! Come over here!” You turned to look at who she was pointing to and saw a tall, lanky guy. He quickly came over, smoothing the awkward wrinkles on his shirt.

“Yeah what’s up?”

“Could you take Y/N back with you to forensics? I’ve got someone on the line.”

“Yeah sure. Follow me.” He motions for you to come along with him, and you hike your bag up onto your shoulder and start walking.

“You probably heard but I’m Barry.” He says after a moment of silence.

“Y/N.” You reply, giving a small smile.

“So I take it you’ll be working in forensics?”

“Yeah just starting today.”

“That’s my division too. I guess we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other.”

“I guess so.” You say, looking up to smile at him but seeing him steady looking down at you. You blush quickly and look ahead, trying not to appear as awkward as you felt. Barry felt a blush creeping up on him, but he cleared his throat and brushed it off right as you arrived at forensics.

Just then, your phone rang, singing out Hedwig’s Theme. Barry lit up like a child, smiling uncontrollably as you finished the quick call.

“You like Harry Potter?” He asked as soon as the call ended.

“More like love,” you said somewhat sheepishly. You’d never met another person who had the same love for the series as you did, so you tried to tone it down sometimes. You clicked on your phone and showed him the wallpaper, a picture of a lightning bolt and glasses. Barry quickly pulled out his phone and turned it on to see the screensaver, another lightning bolt with words written above and below.

“After all this time…” You began, moving Barry’s hand to bring the phone closer to your face.

“Always.” You both finish at the same time. You both smile and turn to look at each other, but blush and look away quickly.

“Well, here we are.” Barry says, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Cool,” you say, pushing open the door to see a lab area. Barry points you to the empty desk, and you drop your bag there. You were just about to say thank you when you were interrupted by Barry’s phone pinging.

“It’s a text from Joe,” he says explanatorily. “I’ve got to go meet him out with a case. You can come along if you want, see how it all works.” He moves around the lab to grab what he needs, and before you know it, he’s standing in front of you again.

“Wanna come along?”

“Sure,” you reply, grabbing what you set down earlier and setting out with Barry. Just as you were about to leave the lab, you stumbled over the ledge of the doorstep. Just as soon as you braced yourself for falling, you felt two strong hands with long fingers wrap around your arms and push you back to a standing position. When you opened your eyes, which had been screwed shut, you saw Barry standing in front of you, his hands still supporting you. You smiled and mumbled a thanks, still in shock and vaguely embarrassed from your fall.

“Anytime.” Barry said, with a bright smile that made you blush. You stood like that for a moment longer, and you could feel Barry looking at you before remembering himself and moving away to let yourself straighten your outfit before continuing to walk. Barry’s car was right outside the building, and he opened your door before moving around the other side and climbing in. He seems to know where to go, as he starts driving immediately texting who you presumed to be Joe, telling him that he was on his way, and that he’d brought you along. After a moment, Barry tries to break the awkward silence.

“Music?” He asks.

“Yeah sure.” He turns on the radio, and it starts playing one of your favorite songs.

“Oh my god I love this song!” You exclaim, reaching for the volume dial to push it up one further.

“You like Y/F/B?” Barry asks and you nod enthusiastically.

“Me too! The best is…”

“Y/F/S!” You both say at the same time, laughing afterwards.

“You know,” Barry begins. “I’d never thought I would meet someone who likes both Harry Potter and Y/F/B.”

“What can I say? People like me are hard to find.” Just then you pulled up to where the crime was, and you and Barry got out of the car, him reaching into the backseat to get the kit he carries. You two started walking together, in a comfortable silence.

In the silence, you had some time to think. You think you were beginning to like Barry; he was smart, kind, liked the same things you did, and not to mention was pretty good-looking. Brushing your thoughts aside, you continued to walk along with Barry, ducking under the police tape. Barry quickly introduces you to Joe while he apologizes for being late (again). He motions for you to come along with him, and you help him while you two work. At one point, Barry sees something odd and turns to look at you.

“Am I crazy, or is there a second set of footprints?” You look at where he’s motioning and see a second set of treads, with a different pattern than the others.

“Don’t worry, you’re just as sane as I am.” You joke, quoting one of your favorite lines from Harry Potter. Barry picks up on it and laughs with you, before Joe calls him over, leaving you to finish your task alone.

“What’s up Joe?”

“Don’t play that game with me Barry.” Joe replies with a fatherly tone, to which Barry gives a quizzical expression. Joe sighs at Barry’s obliviousness before continuing.

“Y/N, Barry. She likes you. I’m pretty sure you like her too.” Joe says with another look, and Barry blushes in response, signaling that Joe was right.

“Come on Barry, ask her out. You two would be cute together.” He claps Barry on the shoulder before sending him back towards you, with an extra vote of confidence.

“Hey Barry” you say, smiling up at him, which he returns. You two quickly finish your job and go back to his car, taking the samples back to the lab. As you reach a stop light, Barry turns to look at you.

“Listen, Y/N. You’re uhh, really cool, and nice, and you seem super smart, and I was wondering if, uhh, you might wanna, uhh, grab coffee sometime, or something.” He quickly looks away, and you see the blush creeping up his neck and onto his cheeks. You smile in return, and take a moment before replying.

“Barry,” you begin and he turns to look at you again. “I’d love to get coffee with you.” He beams, and takes your smaller hand in his as you two drive off.
