Chapter 5

Robin and I shuffled uncomfortably through the forest in our damp clothes that stuck to our cold, aching bodies. When we finally reached the DeNoir's castle, Robin's father was stood by the large metal gate. "Robin, where have you been? We have matters to discuss!" he exclaimed angrily. As he looked at me, I could see something in his eyes. It looked almost sympathetic.

"Maria, you should leave" Robin whispered sadly, as he approached his father. I didn't argue. I didn't want to get on his father's bad side. He and Uncle Benjamin were no longer enemies, but he still frightened me. The journey back to the manor was just as painful as the one to the castle. Miss Heliotrope was pacing up and down by the front door, as usual, when I didn't return home on time.

"Maria, my dear! W-w-what happened? You're d-drenched!" she stuttered, pulling me inside.

[Robin's POV]

My father pointed towards the chair beside me. I sat on it slowly and waited. "Robin, Lady Naomi is visiting at noon tomorrow. I want you looking your best when she arrives. Understood?" he sighed. I peered up at him in confusion. "Why for Lady Naomi? She is only an acquaintance of yours" I replied.

"For heaven's sake robin!" he pounded his fist on the table angrily. "She is going to be your wife!"

My eyes widened as I processed his words in my mind. "Father, I can't marry her! I am in love with someone else!" I yelled. He leaned closer to me and stared into my eyes, his full of anger and disappointment, and also even sympathy. It was clear that he didn't want me to do this either, but it was as if he had no choice. "Do not disobey me again, Robin" he threatened. I couldn't fight back.
