Chapter 5

Nyle

Selena is looking back at me in shock. I am confused but super excited to see her again.

"What are you doing here?" I sign.

"I live here. Gilbert is my cousin." She signs.

"Really! He's my best friend and my regular interpreter." I sign and she smiles brightly at me.

Gilbert comes around the corner the hallway and says something to Selena but he does not sign for me to understand.

"Sorry come in." She signs and blushes. Making me smile even more at her. She walks away and I check her out as she is doing this .I bite my lip and smile. I catch Gilbert's eyes and they are narrowed at me.

"What are you doing?" He signs.

"Enjoying the view." I sign. He shakes his head at me.

"Let me show you to your room." He signs.

"Ok. Mom wait for me here please." I look at Christine and she is scowling at me. "What Christine?"

"I need to have a minute alone with you." She signs.

"Fine. Follow us to my room." I sign and I am clearly agitated.

I follow Gilbert and he shows me my room. It is really big. The walk in closet already has all my clothes in it. My bed is already made up. I am gratefull that he did all this for me. He points to a door.

"Bathroom." He signs.

"I have my own bathroom?"

"No. You have to share." He signs and he opens the door and opposite door is open. I can see Selena's room beyond the door. She is lying down on her bed with a guy.

"Who is that?" I sign my eyes never leaving Selena.

"That's Charlie Selena's best friend. He is gay and has a crush on me." He signs. I am pleased that he is not her boyfriend. Selena sits up and smiles at me. Charlie also smiles and waves at us. Gilbert looks at me and notices how my eyes never leave Selena.

"What's going on?' Gilbert signs as he closes the door.

"Nothing." I sign and smile and look away. He gets my attention with a wave of his hand.

"Nyle." He signs.

"She was my nurse and man she is something spectacular." I sign. Noticing Christine out the corner of my eye. Damn I forgot that she was there. Ok maybe I didn't forget. She is pissed but that's nothing new.

"I'll give you sometime alone. Gilbert signs as he closes the door behind him.

"What the hell are you doing Nyle!" She signs erratically.

"What do you mean?" I sign trying not loose it.

"What are you doing to us?"

"There is no us Christine."

"You like her?"

"I think she is great. Yes I like her."

"You can't!"

"Why?"

"Because I love you and because....because she is a hearie!" She signs and her face is full of anger.

"I don't care that she can hear!"

"Did you kiss her?"

"That is none your business Christine."

"You are embarrassed."

"No I am not!"

"Than tell me!"

"Yes! I kissed her not once but twice! Is that what you wanted me to tell you!"

"Did you sleep with her? She signs through tears. It makes me snap.

"Are you insane! For one I just met her and for two I just had surgery I am not sleeping with anyone!"

"So you want a girl that will kiss someone that she just met? Way to pick them Nyle!"

"I kissed her. Christine you are acting crazy."

"I'm what!?" She signs and slaps me hard causing my nose to bleed. "Nyle I am sorry I didn't mean to!"

"That right there is why we cannot be together. You have hit me for the last time Christine. Get the hell out now."

I open the bathroom door and Selena sees me with blood on my face. Her eyes get wide. Christine is staring at me from my bedroom. I look in the mirror and see a red handprint on my face.

"Did she hit you Nyle?" Selena signs. She is now standing at my side in almost a protective way.

I look at Selena in the mirror and nod. Charlie hands me a wet hand towel for my nose. Selena pushes past Charlie and I and runs into my room. Shit I think and look at Charlie we both run into my bedroom. Selena is much shorter than Christine and she is standing toe to toe with her.

"Get out of my house now." She signs and speaks at the same time. It must be a yelling voice because Gilbert is running in now. "She hit Nyle." She signs. Gilbert looks back at me and sees my bloody nose and the hand print across my face.

"Get out of my house Christine.' Gilbert signs evenly but his face is anything but. She pushes past Selena and Gilbert. Christine turns around and flips us off. Selena shakes her head at her.

I am beyond embarrassed that this has happened. What is worse is the heartbreaking look on my mother's face as she stands there staring at me.
