Chapter 12

Selena

Sean is still standing in the kitchen and it's making me feel uncomfortable. He finally leaves and I can cook in peace. He is acting so weird. I put all my energy in cooking. It is my escape and I love it. Everything is almost ready and looking amazing. Gilbert comes into the kitchen and smiles brightly at me.

"It smells great Sel." He says.

"Thanks cousin."

"Hey I want to buy a special dessert."

"Ok what do you have in mind?"

"Double fudge chocolate cake from Death By Chocolate Shop."

"Yes! I love it!" I say excited.

I finish cooking all the food and I am startled by Mario as I cleaning the pots I used.

"You scared me Mario." I say and laugh.

"Sorry Sel." He laughs. " Hey Sean wants to talk to you but he wants me interpret. He says that he only wants you to speak and not sign to him.

"What?" I ask confused.

"I really don't know what he has to say. I am confused too."

"Fine." I say as Mario leaves and brings back Sean. He looks me up and down. "What do you want to tell me?" I say while Mario interprets.

"Selena, please listen to what I am going to tell you." I nod. "You are not part of the deaf culture or community and never will be." He signs. Mario's eyes are huge a saucers. "With that begin said you need to leave Nyle alone now. He needs to be with Christine not you."

"Sean!" Mario signs. "Enough!"

"It will never work and I'll make sure it doesn't." He signs and stomps off.

I am standing there not knowing what to say or do. I am so upset that I begin to shut down. I look down at my feet. I take deep breaths so that I do not cry in front of Mario. I begin to open and close the cabinets. I am trying to avoid looking at Mario.

"Sel, I am so sorry I didn't know that he was going to do that." Mario says. I shrug and take out the plates and begin to place them on the table.

Gilbert walks in the kitchen with a beautiful cake and he is watching me closely. I side step him and put down forks and serve the up food.

"What's wrong Sel?" He asks as Mario is looking on.

"Nothing. Just not feeling well all of the sudden. I am going to get Nyle and tell him to come and eat." I go to his room and he is finishing getting dressed. "Food is ready. Your plate is on the table."

He comes to me and hugs me and he kisses my neck and moves to my lips. I sigh and take a deep breath. His hands rub my back I love the warmth of his hands on me.

"Are you ok?" He signs.

"My head is hurting me. I am just going to go lie down." I sign and he leads me to my room.

"I'll lie down with you."

"No. Go and enjoy your food. Let me know if you like it."

"You sure?"

"Yes."

"Ok. I'll come back and check on you later." He signs and I nod. He leaves my room. I close the door and slide my back down it until I am sitting on the floor. I sit there for a second. My mind is a complete mess. How dare Sean tell me what to do. My feelings are hurt because I have always treated him with kindness and respect. I am really liking Nyle so much and I haven't felt like this in forever. A tear falls down my cheek.

"What if he is right?"
