Chapter 31

Nyle

                     My heart is hammering hard in my chest. I look over at Sel to make sure she is not freaking out. To my surprise she has the biggest grin and her face and I can tell her by her shoulders rising and falling that she is laughing. I breathe a sigh of relief and smile too.

"Do twins run in either of your families?" Dr. Young asks. I look at the interpreter to understand what she has said. We both nod and I look at Sel.

"Really, you have twins in your family?" I sign to her.

"Yes. My little cousins are twins," She says.

"I am a twin Dr. Young." I sign and laugh still in shock.

"Wow! Are you identical or fraternal?" She asks.

"Fraternal, we look nothing alike. He has red hair." I sign.

"Congratulations you two! Nyle is twin deaf too?"

"My whole family is but Nico can hear a tiny bit but not much. He is actually a DJ in New York. We are breaking stereotypes of what deaf people can and cannot do. We can do it all."

"That is really amazing Nyle." She says with a smile. "Selena I am going to put in a referral to a pediatric audiologist so you can meet them before the babies come to go over options." Dr. Young Says. We both nod. "Any questions?"

"Yes, we are traveling to San Francisco and since we are having twins is it safe to fly?" Sel asks.

"Yes of course. You can make the audiology appointment for when you get back. Anything else?"

"Can we still have sex?" I sign and the doctor laughs.

"Nyle!" Sel signs and her face her face is bright red.

"I'm sorry." I sign. I feel bad for embarrassing Sel.

"No. No that is a valid question Nyle. Yes it is completely safe." Dr. Young says. "Have great trip."

"Thank you." We both sign and say.

              Dr. Young and the interpreter leave the room together. I look and kiss Sel on the top of her head. She begins to get dressed once she is dressed she hugs my waist tightly. The nurse returns and she is carrying a long strip of paper. She hands it to Sel and it is a copy of the ultrasound. She says goodbye to us and leaves us looking at the picture. I look over at Sel and she is crying.

"Baby, are you ok?" I sign anxiously.

"Yes! Look at our precious gifts." She signs and smiles through her tears. I grab her in my arms and kiss her passionately.

"Yes babe our precious tiny tic-tacs." I sign and she laughs. The ultrasound is grainy but they are there. Our babies are marked as Baby A and Baby B. My hear is so happy I loved growing up so close to Nico and I hope these babies have as an amazing relationship like we do.

         We go to the nurse's station and she asks the lady behind the counter a question. The woman nods at whatever Sel has just told her. The woman hands her four more strips of the ultrasound. I smile at the woman but my attention goes back to Sel.

"Four more?"

"Yes, I want to frame them and give them to our parents and family." She signs.

"Great idea, babe!"

"I am going to make the appointment for the hearing specialist now." She signs.

"Ok." She takes my hand and we go to the audiology department which is just down the hall.

"I'd like to make an appointment to see a pediatric audiologist for a consultation please." She says and signs. To my surprise the receptionist signs back to her.

"Sure, I have something for next week if that is ok?"

"What day?" I sign.

"I have something on Tuesday or Thursday." She signs. I look at my calendar on my phone and my Tuesday is already filled with photo shoots and interviews.

"How about Thursday babe?" I ask Sel.

"Sure that is fine. Thursday please."

         We leave and till have a lot of time before we have to head to the airport. Gilbert and Charlie will meet us there. We decide to go buy frames for the ultrasounds. We find really cute ones that say double trouble on them. Sel want to make sure we give Mom her frame before we leave. We invite her to have lunch with us before we leave.

"What do you want to eat babe?"

"These babies really like steak so somewhere we can get steak."

"Sure thing my love." I sign. Sel sends as text to mom letting her know where to meet us.

         We get to the restaurant and mom is already there waiting for us. She hugs the both of us tightly. We go inside and sit down.

"Mom, we have a gift for you." I sign.

"A gift for me? What is it?" She signs. Sel hands her the gift bag.

      Mom takes the gift bag from Sel. Mom has a huge smile on her face. She takes out the frame and looks at it. It takes her a moment to take register what she looking at. Once she does her eyes go wide.

"Two babies?" she signs with tears of happiness. I look at her and smile broadly.

I just nod at her with tears in my own eyes.
