Chapter 1: CRFG- Columbus and Red Fox Group (Carter Edwards)
(Read the prologue before you begin!)
Another day in Red Fox. I was still alive. Sometimes I wish I wasn't. The moans of the biters was unbearable sometimes. But, another day meant morning duties. In my room it was Billy on the top bunk, Sam on the air matress, and me on the bottom bunk. Sam had left, and Billy was still asleep. I got up quietly, trying not to wake Billy. That failed. Because, as soon as I got out of bed, he woke up.
"Thanks for waking me up," he said.
I rolled my eyes, picked up my clothes, and went into the bathroom. I put on the regular outfit of a t-shirt, jeans, and boots. I walked back into the room where I found Billy dressed and strapping on his gun. I did the same and went to breakfast. This morning was scrambled eggs, fish, and an apple. Catherine, our house mother, came in with the mail. The house mother was in charge of the kids in the house. There were six of us, three boys and three girls. The house mother and father were in charge of the property. Our house father was a South Gate Guard.
"Good morning, Carter," Catherine said.
"Good morning," I replied.
I, being the oldest, was in charge of the other kids when Catherine was working. I was 12, only a year away from being an adult in Red Fox. The adult age was different in the apocalypse, only 13. In age I was oldest then, Billy, Sam, Katrina, and the twins Casey and Lacey. I pulled on my leather jacket and walked outside. We were on Housing Street in building 14. I walked off our street onto Main Street. I walked to the river carrying the water bucket. Winter was coming. There was a chill in the air, and the leaves were falling off the trees. I got in line for water at the river. Vincent Faller, from House 27, walked up behind me. Vincent was 14 and picked on me all the time.
"Hey Vincent," I said.
"Hey little Carter. Delta Team and I are going on a run," he said.
"So," I said.
"I think you're t too chicken to come," he said.
That caught me by surprised. I wasn't supposed to go on runs. Which is why I surprised myself when I said, "You want to bet."
He replied, "Yeah."
"I'm coming," I said.
I filled my bucket, dropped it off at the house, and went to North Gate.
