(Listen to I'll be good for this chapter, it's up above)
Valentine smirked, "but today is a special day."
Jonathan's heart caught in his throat. He had come for his birthday? His eyes narrowed, ha, he wouldn't do that. He'd only celebrate 'pretty boys' Birthday.
"Really Father? What would that be?" Valentine frowned and gripped Jonathan's shoulder.
"You know what I mean Jonathan, don't test my patience."
"My Birthday?" He asked, the words bringing memories from years past. "Yes Jonathan."
The words stunned him, they made him feel a pang of something, sorrow? More than that, they made him angry. Now? After so many years? Now he was good enough to be celebrated? Only now?
"Happy 16th Birthday Jonathan." Valentine handed him a perfectly wrapped present. Tendrils of hope crept into Jonathan's mind, maybe it would be different from now on. Then his mind reminded him of the millions of times he had thought that before. Each and every time, only to be let down. Again and again. This wasn't Father and son bonding time. This was yet another test, just to see how he would react. To torture him further. Valentine was staring blankly at him, arms crossed.
"You going to open it?"
Jonathan smiled, the broken kind. "
I don't need to, Father."
He spoke the words with such hatred even Valentine's stone features flickered slightly.
"I already know what is inside." Valentine raised an eyebrow in question. His days of hiding his Father's stele and rearranging his papers to annoy him were over. He was stronger now.
"The family ring."
He whispered meeting Valentines eyes evenly.
"Yes. You deserve it."
Jonathan carefully undid the paper and slipped it on his finger. It fit perfectly as though it was a part of him. Strangely, it felt good. When he looked up again his Father was gone. Of course.
"Thank you."
He whispered quietly. He walked to his room and got out of his training gear. He admired how the ring suited him in the mirror. For just a moment he seemed normal. Until he took in his scars from the metal demon whips. His Father's only display of affection. He heard the voice again that trapped him in his own body.
You don't belong here. You don't belong anywhere. No one wants you. No one wants a broken boy.
So stop being broken. The terror in his eyes was replaced by a cold mask. Surprise.
